摘要:
Fruits ofCucurbita maximahybrid ‘Delica’ harvested within a few days of completing expansion had fewer fungal storage rots than older fruits harvested either 2 or 4 weeks later. This result was consistent over three growing seasons and appeared to be independent of the harvest date. Although the age of fruit determined the susceptibility of fruit to rot, other factors, such as storage temperature, influenced both the rate and the amount of rot development. Within seasons, fruit from later-sown crops began rotting earlier and developed more rots than fruit from early-sown crops. There are implications for the export trade, and the present methods for timing harvests, based on visual criteria, need to be changed if fungal rots are to be reduced to consistently low levels.

摘要:
Several aspects of the sampling of apple fruit for mineral analysis and prediction of bitter pit incidence were studied. Variability of mineral analyses can be minimised, and precision of bitter pit prediction increased, by sampling fewer fruit per tree from a large number of trees. Less variability in Ca analysis was found by taking two opposite plugs of cortical tissue from each fruit. Fruits from the upper parts of trees had less Ca and a higher incidence of bitter pit. If a high proportion of fruit in the crop are from these sites, then a sampling scheme which excludes them may result in less accurate predictions. The relationship between fruit Ca concentration and fruit size varied with the crop load on tree tree. In heavily laden trees, the decrease in Ca concentration with increasing fruit weight was half that in lightly laden trees. The relationships between fruit size and both bitter pit incidence and Ca concentration were sufficiently strong to be useful in standardising sampling schemes for analysis and prediction.

摘要:
Kiwifruit, tamarillo, pepino, feijoa, and casimiroa seedlings were inoculated with virulent strains ofAgrobacterium. The incidence of transformation, as demonstrated by tumour formation, varied with the particular fruit crop. Tumours were induced on pepino with eightAgrobacteriumstrains, on casimiroa with seven strains, on kiwifruit and feijoa with six strains, and on tamarillo with two. These results suggest that all five crops should be amenable toAgrobacterium-mediated transformation techniques.

摘要:
‘Budjump’ is the popular collective term for floral bud disorders occurring in some nashi cultivars grown in New Zealand. On affected trees some floral buds abort, disintegrating when touched. Other floral buds produce fewer flowers, and flower parts may be incompletely developed. Black, shrivelled flower buds can be found among subtending leaves and flowers. Occurrence of the disorder varies greatly between individual trees, cultivars, locations, and seasons. No causal mechanism has been identified and there are no established control methods for budjump.

摘要:
Some of the botany of wasabi (Wasabia japonica) is described, especially as it relates to seed production. A small evaluation to test conditions for germination was set up. Cool (5°C), wet conditions ensured the highest germination rates.
