摘要:
We have demonstrated that the senescence ofSandersonia aurantiaca(Hook.) flowers is insensitive to ethylene. Treating detached, physiologically mature flowers with propylene (0.5%, 24 h) did not alter the patterns of colour change, fresh weight, or respiration which normally occur as the flowers senesce. Silver thiosulphate (STS, 1 mM) did not extend the vase life of the flowers. Postharvest ethylene production by flowers was negligible, regardless of whether they had been exposed to propylene and or STS. Cycloheximide treatments (1 μM,100 μM) inhibited the loss of pigment or fading associated with flower senescence. This suggests that de novo protein synthesis is required for pigment degradation in senescing sandersonia flowers. However, 100 μMcycloheximide also caused detached flowers to wilt prematurely, thereby changing the normal sequence of events that occur during senescence in this flower. Exposing flowers to actinomycin D caused a subtle change in their pattern of senescence and in vitro translation of RNA extracted from the flowers produced a pattern of translation products that differed from that of control flowers held in water. The data demonstrate that specific changes in both transcription and translation accompany the ethylene‐insensitive senescence of sandersonia flowers.

摘要:
The effects of three storage temperatures (1,4, and 9.5°C) and six storage durations (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 days) on tuber sprouting and stem quality ofSandersonia aurantiacawere investigated. Tubers did not sprout at lifting when given inductive conditions, but high percentages sprouted (91.7%) after only 30 days of chilling. Percent sprouting remained high (93.8%) after 90 days of storage, but decreased to 86.5% with 150 days of storage. Sprouting percentages were high for all storage durations at 4°C. Sprouting was significantly less after storage at 9.5°C than at 1 and 4°C at all storage durations. Time to initiation of sprouting and the sprouting period decreased with storage duration up to 90–120 days and were lowest at 4°C. Stem length and flower numbers per stem were significantly higher at storage durations of 90–120 days. Following 90 days of storage, stem length was greater for storage at 9.5°C than at 1 or 4°C. Storage at 4°C for 90–120 days is required to ensure rapid and even sprouting of sandersonia.

摘要:
Seedlings ofRadermachera sinicaHemsl. were grown in peat/composted bark (7:3, v/v) medium to evaluate their response to five levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and lime.R. sinicaproved to be an adaptable species quite tolerant of nutrient extremes. There was a strong response to added N with an optimum at 300 g N/m3, equivalent to 85 g N/m3per month and a leaf N content of 2.5%. P, and more noticeably K, had little influence on foliage growth and consequently there were few nutrient interactions. Optimum P additions were at c. 200 g P/m3or a leaf P content of 0.35%, whereas high P fertilisation depressed foliage growth. The lime rate for optimum growth was at 6 kg/m3and pH 4.8.

摘要:
Growth and yield of chickpeas (Cicer arietinumL.) was examined over two growing seasons (1990–91 and 1991–92) in Canterbury, New Zealand. The 1990–91 season was very suitable for chickpea growth and the seed yield was high at 345 g/m2. The 1991 ‐92 season was less suitable and seed yield was lower at only 187 g/m2. In both growing seasons the application of nitrogen (N) fertiliser increased seed yields, with 50 kg N/ha giving a 17% increase in 1990–91 and 100 kg N/ha giving a 43% yield increase in 1991 ‐92. Inoculation withRhizobiumhad no effect on yield. There was no benefit from increasing plant population, even though higher plant populations intercepted more solar radiation. This was primarily because of a reduced number of pods/plant at the higher plant populations. Response to sowing date suggests that spring sowings will be the highest yielding. Crops sown in winter yielded up to 700 g dry matter (DM)/ m2, but harvest index (HI) was low at only 0.25. The spring sowing produced 210 g seed/m2, from only 410 g of DM/m2giving a HI of 0.51.

摘要:
’Rex’ (Pisum sativumL.)isanewwhite field pea, bred by S. A. Nickerson of France, that has been released by Crop & Food Research for arable cropping farmers in Canterbury, New Zealand. ‘Rex’ has a conventional plant type with an upright growth habit. The dry seed of ‘Rex’ is white, with a yellow cotyledon, and a mean 1000 seed weight of 260 g. ‘Rex’ has produced high and stable seed yields in regional evaluation trials conducted over four successive seasons in Canterbury, New Zealand.
