The effects of growing media, pot size, number of stems, and plant density on fruit yields of greenhouse‐grown babaco plants(Carica × heilborniiBadillo n.m.pentagona(Heilborn)) were determined. No significant differences were found in the total yield or days to harvest between plants grown in sawdust and Peatlite (2 peat : 1 perlite), nor between plants grown in 23‐litre and 45‐litre pots, nor between two‐stemmed and single‐stemmed plants. However, two‐stemmed plants produced significantly more, but smaller, fruits/plant than single‐stemmed plants. The yield (fruit weight)/plant = 6.88 + 4.50/xr2=0.97,P <0.05, fruit number/plant = 1/(0.050–0.0075/x)r2 = 0.79,P <0.05, and fruit size (mean fruit weight) = 386 + 313‐x/0.86r2 =0.94,P <0.05, decreased over plant densities ranging from 0.5 plants/m2to 3.7 plants/m2. However, on an area basis, yield (fruit weight)/m2= 1/(0.032 + 0.155‐x)r2= 0.79,P <0.05, and fruit number/m2= ‐23.3 + 49x‐2r2 = 0.98,P <0.05, increased, indicating that with increasing plant density, greater economic returns might be achieved, disregarding fruit size, which decreased with higher yields. The flowering habit of the babaco is indeterminant and as fruit are formed further up the stem, they mature smaller. At 49°N where the experiments were conducted, plants failed to set fruit from November to March. This pattern was related to the amount of solar radiation and daylength.

Galtonia’Moonbeam’ is shown to be a tetraploid. Details of the chromosome number and karyotype are presented in comparison with those ofGaltonia candicans(Baker) Decne. The significance of increased ploidy level is discussed and contrasted with increased ploidy levels reported in other bulbous ornamental plants.

Spawned mushroom compost compressed in shrink‐wrapped blocks was stored at 4, 15, and 24°C for either 10 or 14 days. The properties of the compost blocks were evaluated at spawning and after storage. The stored compost productivity was also evaluated. Storage temperature has little effect on chemical and microbiological properties of the compost for a 10‐day storage period. However, after a 14‐day storage period the effect of storage temperature on compost properties was more noticeable. For compost stored at either 15 or 24°C for 14 days, the thermophilic actinomycete and thermophilic fungi populations, and the compost pH decreased whereas NH4‐N and NO3‐N contents of the compost increased. Development ofPenicilliumspp. was encouraged at 15°C. Compost stored at 24°C for 14 days was densely colonised byAgaricus bisporus.Water content, total N, organic matter, and C/N ratio of the compost did not vary significantly with storage temperature. Storage temperature did not significantly affect mushroom productivity or quality.
