About 65 scientists from 12 different countries met on September 10th and llth, 1992 at the Institut Laue-Langevin at the first common scientific workshop of the ESRF and the ILL to discuss different methods used in neutron and X-ray diffraction in order to obtain information about partial structure factors. This third satellite meeting of the international conference on Liquid and Amorphous Metals (Vienna, August 31–September 4,1992) was organized in collaboration with the CNRS-Grenoble by P. Chieux, J.-B. Suck(ILL), A. Kvick, C. Riekel (ESRF) and D. Raoux (CNRS).

The International Seminar on Structural Investigations at Pulsed Neutron Sources took place on September 1–4, 1992 at Dubna, Russia. The seminar was organized by the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research with the support from the Neutron Diffraction Commission of IUCr.

摘要:
The restart of the Budapest research reactor after an important upgrading is foreseen in 1992. At 10 MW power beam tubes with various parameters, i.e. fast, thermal (1014neutronscm−2.sec−1flux) and cold neutrons and important irradiation volumes, are available for a wide range of research and application activities.

At present, the interest in investigations of neutron β-decay has increased greatly. The recent growth in experimental results has been brought about by two circumstances: the practical improvement of ultracold neutron storage methods in material and magnetic traps, and the achievement of a level of accuracy for the neutron lifetime and β-decay asymmetry measurements which provides a really interesting check of the weak interaction Standard Model. Figure 1 shows the number of neutron lifetime experiments carried out in various years. The most precise latest experiments are presented in the Table. The average neutron lifetime obtained from these data is 887.0 ± 1.6 s, and the value of the neutron β-decay asymmetry coefficient A is equal to −0.1126 ± 0.0011. The neutron lifetime measurements and β-decay asymmetry measurements carried out at the PNPI, given in the table, are among the most precise world data (8, 13).

“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics.” Most of us can relate to Mark Twain's sentiment quite well; even as scientists, we exhibit a notable sense of apprehension towards the subject. The causes are not difficult to find: in our undergraduate lectures in Statistics, unlike those in Physics, for example, we are not taught any underlying general principles; rather, we are presented with an array of seeminglyad hoctests and procedures with no obvious rationale for deciding which one to use. But does statistics have to be this way?
