A successful combination of TAS+NSE=TASSE has been built on the Polarised Neutron Triple-Axis Spectrometer PONTA of the ISSP, University of Tokyo, at the JRR-3M reactor, based on optimized field shape (OFS) precession coils. With a pair of simple and short OFS coils, energy resolutions (FWHM) of 0.2μeV have been obtained on the thermal three-axis spectrometer PONTA. With respect to classical TAS, the relative resolution (ΔE/E) was improved from ∼ 10−1to 10−5at a cost representing less than 10 percent of the polarized TAS itself. No intensity loss as compared to the normal polarized mode has been observed. Critical slowing down of (DCO3)2dimmers in KDCO3, with extremely large relaxation times 0.15μeV/K, has been observed near the T=353K order-disorder phase transition. Furthermore, an incomplete slowing down of the quasielastic scattering due to the dynamical Huang scattering at the phase transition has been observed for the first time, which can be related to the softening of the shear elastic constant c66observed in the ultrasonic measurements.

The present article reports on recent measurements on IN10B, a new setup for the backscattering spectrometer IN10 at the ILL, allowing for an increase in energy transfer without loss in resolution. The potential of this instrumental setup is discussed and recent experimental results are shown.

D7 is a unique instrument. Using scattering of spin polarized neutrons with polarization analysis, it is possible to separate the coherent, incoherent, and magnetic scattering in the same experiment. No less importantly, the internal calibration yields the absolute cross sections; the essential information for quantitative data treatment and comparison of experimental results with theoretical models. The use of a multidetector arrangement results in a significant increase in counting rate compared to triple-axis instruments where polarization analysis can also be performed.

Neutron Spin-Filters (NSF) using gaseous polarized3He have long been recognized as having enormous potential value in many polarized neutron scattering applications and, accordingly, ILL started a development program some years ago. This report gives an account of the present status of the project. Let us first briefly recall the reasons why the 3He-NSF is desirable as a generic polarization tool:
