摘要:
The workshop, Probing Frontiers in Matter with Neutron Scattering, was held from December 12–14, 1997. It was jointly sponsored by Don Parkin, Center Leader of the Center for Materials Science and Roger Pynn, Division Director of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center and was cochaired and organized by Zachary Fisk and Ferenc Mezei. The practical organization was handled outstandingly by Joan Thompson and Rose Vigil.

摘要:
From March 16 to 19, 1998, Lucerne, Switzerland was the venue of the Third International Topical Meeting on Neutron Radiography (ITMNR−3). The 80 participants from 16 countries in five continents represented a comprehensive cross–section of people working in this field of research with neutrons and provided an exciting framework for an intensive exchange of opinions and knowledge.

摘要:
The 4th VAMAS TWA 20 Workshop, hosted by the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR), was held from April 22–24.1998 inGaithersburg, Maryland. VAMAS TWA 20 is a Technical Working Area within the international Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards. The focus of TWA 20 is residual stress measurement by neutron diffraction. The scope of TWA 20 and discussions held at its inaugural meeting in January 1996 at the ILL in Grenoble, France were summarized by the chairman of the organization, G.A. Webster, in a meeting report in Neutron News Vol. 7, No. 4, 1996. Featuring discussions and presentations by the leaders of the five task groups, the present workshop focused on reviewing the actions and progress that had been made since the Nyköping meeting (June 1997) and the tasks to be carried out over the next several months. A few hours of the meeting were devoted to a tour of the neutron facilities at the NCNR.

摘要:
The sixth meeting of the International Group on Research Reactors (IGORR 6) was held in Taejon, The Republic of Korea, from April 29–May 1, 1998. Attendance was excellent–over 100 participants from 17 countries. slightly higher than lGORR 5. The meeting was very well organized, and very graciously hosted, by the staff of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).

摘要:
The committee of the European Neutron Scattering Association (ENSA) met for its ninth meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden from May 4–5, 1998. As one of the first items on the agenda, the joint Neutron Scattering Society of the Czech Republic and Slovakia was welcomed as the newest full member of ENSA. which now comprises fifteen user organizations.

In the last five years, a major challenge among the soft matter community has been to elucidate the relationship between rheological properties of complex fluids and their mesoscopic structure as revealed by small angle scattering (SAS) experiments.

摘要:
Paul Ageron was an immensely important figure at the ILL, and his death, in February 1998, left us much poorer, especially in efforts to obtain the best sources of neutrons. An obituary, as well as some tributes, appeared in Neutron News Vol. 9, Number 3. Until recently, he had been working on a review of the different ways for production and tailoring neutron beams. I t shows the way his mind was working and, although incomplete, we are happy to publish it in Neutron News as a tribute to his contributions, and as a reminder of his consummate skills in coaxing the last useful neutron out of present-day sources. We already miss his incisive questions about every conceived development in neutron science.

摘要:
By the time you read this article, you will probably be able to repeat most of our calculations on an ordinary desktop computer, and you will certainly have a much wider choice of software with which to do it! Such is the speed at which the neutron-scatterers toolbox for molecular modeling is developing. The increasing use of computational methods to predict neutron spectra from atomic-level structure may seem blasphemous to those who are more accustomed to measuring physical properties directly. However, a large number of experiments can only be analyzed by comparing models with measured data, and computational methods are now the ultimate means of comparing a zero-parameter model with the results of a neutron-scattering experiment. Carefully devised experiments will always be crucial for distinguishing between models, and neither the experimental, nor the computational method, should be considered in isolation.

摘要:
In a small angle scattering experiment with long flight paths, a beam of slow neutrons falls under gravity–by a significant amount. For long–wavelength neutrons, this can have several effects: (i) the main neutron beam can fall off the bottom of the detector; (ii) the parabolic path of the neutrons in the collimation tube may prevent the neutrons from reaching the sample; and (iii) the wavelength spread of the neutrons causes vertical smearing of both main beam and scattered beam. All these effects can limit the resolution and minimum measurable wavevector. We demonstrate experimentally that the refraction of the beam by suitably designed prisms can remove these problems. We show how this cancellation may be understood i n terms of the wave properties of neutrons.
