摘要:
The November 1990 issue of the Materials Research Bulletin is devoted to the contributions of neutron scattering in materials sciences. The articles are highly informative and easily readable. It is noteworthy that the contribution by John Axe, John Hayter and Roger Pynn brings together scientists from three of the five major neutron sources in the U.S.A. Scientists and technologists can but gain from rational collaboration between medium-sized (not ‘big’) central facilities. This does not exclude healthy competition, or differences of emphasis or of style.

摘要:
An International Conference sponsored by the Indian Atomic Energy Commission was held at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center(BARC), Trombay from Jan 21–25, 1991. Unfortunately, the timing coincided with the outbreak of hostilities in the Persian Gulf so that almost two thirds of the foreign delegates cancelled-their plans to attend. In the end about 30 foreigners did come, with a sizable contingent form the Soviet Union, and representatives form the U.S. Europe, and Japan. In spite of the reduced attendance by foreigners, their enthusiasm and the strong local contingent of about 150 scientists assured a lively meeting.

摘要:
High in the northcentral mountains of Los Alamos, New Mexico, is the Manuel Lujan, Jr. Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE), a pulsed-spallation neutron source located at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. At LANSCE, neutrons are produced by spallation when a pulsed 800-MeV proton beam impinges on a tungsten target. The proton pulses are provided by the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). An associated Proton Storage Ring (PSR) then alters the intensity, time structure, and repetition rate of the pulses (Figure 1).

摘要:
The IBR-2 Is a powerful (high flux) pulsedreactor of periodic operation built at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, USSR. IBR-2 has operated since 1982 and its ekperimental facilities are open to a wide scientific community. Dubna is a small town 130 km North of Moscow situated on the banks of the Volga River.

摘要:
Strains in engineering components are commonly classified into two types, microstrains and macrostrains. Microstrains vary over distances that are short relative to the scale of the microstructure and are of considerable importance in the characterization of engineering materials, such as composites and alloys containing secondary phases where differences in expansion coefficients cause stresses to be generated in the separate constituents. In most types of microstrain measurement their short range generally precludes their spatial resolution and data from each phase is integrated from the entire volume of the specimen. Macrostrains, in contrast, vary with location and can be spatially resolved. They usually relate to the shape of a component and are particularly significant near discontinuities such as at sharp bends, defects, or surfaces where stress concentrations occur or stress gradients are often steep. Their spatial variation may be determined by sampling small discrete wolumes throughout a specimen using an appropriate strain gauge. This article is concerned with the use of neutrons for macrostrain scanning.

摘要:
The lattices of aperiodic structures do not have the translation invariances (in 3-dimensions) of classical crystals. The consequence is that conventional structure determination methods are not strictly relevant anymore.
