摘要:
Some 180 scientists gathered in the cooler (after the stifling heat of Bordeaux and Toulouse) air of the famous alpine ski resort (1860 m) in Alpe d'Huez, France, from 30July- 1 August, 1990, to consider the complementarity of two powerful probes used today in condensed matter research - neutrons and X-ray synchrotron radiation. Given the wide spectrum of research using these techniques the organizers did not try to cover everything; furthermore, the meeting was a satellite conference of the IUCr Congress in Bordeaux, France, so that the emphasis was on diffraction. Areas omitted intentionally were studies of photoemission and X-ray spectroscopy (e.g.XANES, EXAFS which were covered in another satellite conference) and the large field of neutron inelastic scattering.

摘要:
Approximately 150 scientists attended the conference on Short Range Order in III Ordered Materials held at the INSTN at the CEN-Saclay site, south of Paris from July 16-18,1990. This was a satellite meeting of the XV IUCr Congress held in Brodeaux, France immediately after this conference. The program chairmen, D. Raoux (Lure) and A Delapaime (LLB-Saclay), did an excellent job in organizing the program into thirty oral presentations and fifty posters on a wide range of topics including: liquids, complex liquids and liquid crystal polymers; phase transitions: oxides and covalent glasses, aerogels and precursors: interfaces and multilayers; amorphous and crystalline metallic alloys; quasicrystals and nanomaterials; and chemical short range order. They even performed a service for most of the attendees to prepare them for the ‘Broiler in Bordeaux’ by assuring that the air conditioning was not functioning!

摘要:
On May 22-23, 1990, a Gorkshop on the application of neutron diffraction to the determination of residual stress in engineering materials was held at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne. Illinois. The workshop was sponsored by the Materials and Components Technology and Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Divisions with partial support from the Division of Educational Programs. Talks were given by recognized experts in the field with ample time provided for attendees and speakers to address issues and concerns regarding the use of neutron diffraction. Examples discussed covered a wide range of materials and geometries from pipe welds to advanced composites, with applications in a wide variety of industries.

摘要:
A three day meeting on Powder Diffraction was held in Toulouse, France on July 16-19, 1990 as a satellite meeting of the XVth Congress of the International Union of Crystallography. The meeting was sponsored by Ministere de la Recherche et de la Technologie, Ministére de I'Education Nationale, de la Jeunesse et des Sports, Centre Na tionale de la Recherche Scientifique, JCPDS-International Centre for Diffraction Data(USA). Conseil Régional Midi-Pyrénées, Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse III, UFR-Physique-Chimie-Automatique, Toulouse III and International Union of Crystallography. In addition it was sponsored by Industry (Action Informatique, Alexandre-Labo Alliant, Centre de Recherche Pierre Fabre, Enraf-Nonius, Inel, Philips, Rich Seifer & Co., Siemens and Socabim). About 250 scientists from twentyfive countries attended.

摘要:
The XV Congress and General Assembly of the IUCr met in Bordeaux, France on the campus of the University of Bordeaux, July 19-28, 1990. Nearly 2000 scientists attended with representatives from qost of the countries of the world, since crystallography covers so many diverse fields. The format of the Congress was to begin each morning with two main lectures in parallel – one devoted to biological subjects and one to some other area of crystallography. These lectures were followed by six or seven microsymposia in specific fields. The afternoons were reserved for poster sessions and viewing the commercial exhibits. There were a few evening lectures by award winners, for example Nobel Laureate R. Huber and Ewald Medal Awardee B. K. Vainshtein.

摘要:
The High-Flux Reactor (HFR) at Petten is a multipurpose research reactor that has been operational since November 1961. In accordance with an agreement bejween the Dutch Government and the Commission of the European Communities, the reactor was taken over by the Commission one year later, on October 31, 1962. The same agreement also led to the foundation of the Petten Establishment of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Communities on a site adjacent to that of the national nuclear research centre, which is now the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation ECN. The HFR belongs now to the Institute for Advanced Materials of the JRC and is funded by the European Communities (circa 10%), the Netherlands (circa 45%), and the Federal Republic of Germany (circa45%). Programmes from these parties are reviewed and assessed in an ‘Advisory Committee on Programme Management.’ Depending on the availability of irradiatibn capacity, the reactor is accessible to other (third) parties on a contract basis. The reactor is operated by ECN for the European Communities.

摘要:
Neutron beam research in India is centered around Cirus and Dhruva reactors at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay, Bombay. They are natural uranium fueled and heavy water moderated reators. Cirus at its maximum rated power of 40 MW and Dhruva at 100 MW provide central fluxes of the order of 6·1013and 2·1014, neutrons/cm2/ sec. Apart from neutron beam research, these reactors are used for isotope production and engineering experiments. Until recently, the neutron facilities at Trombay were mainly used by BARC scientists; now they are part of the National Centre for Neutron Beam Research and are being increasingly used by the university researchers.

摘要:
The NBSR resumed normal operation on April 8,1990. During the planned shutdown, holes for seven guides were drilled through the 7.5 m wall facing the guide hall, three guides with shutters were installed (as planned) within the reactor hall, and progress was made in a number of instrument- related areas.

摘要:
Stable colloidal dispersions of magnetic particles, or ferrofluids, form a technologically important class of magnetic fluids with novel structural features at the microscopic level. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) has proved to be ideally suited to the study of these structures. Recent studies have concentrated on using ferrofluids as new dispersion media for non-magnetic colloids, such as macromolecules. This technique, known as ferrodispersion, is leading to new methods for creating ordered macromolecular structures in dispersed phases.
