摘要:
After the first meeting on Polarized Neutrons for Condensed Matter Investigations at JINR, Dubna in June 1996, t was planned to have the next one in Gatchina. But Prof. S. Maleyev kindly agreed to let us organize it in Grenoble instead and it was held from September 21–23, 1998. The meeting, at the ILL, attracted I 10 participants, combining invited talks and many good-quality poster contributions.

摘要:
The second “New Perspectives in Neutron and Muon Science” meeting was held at Cosener's House in Abingdon from September 23–24, 1998. The objective of this meeting, organized by the Neutron Scattering Group of the Institute of Physics and The Royal Society of Chemistry, and co'sponsored by ISIS and EPSRC, was to provide Ph.D. students and young postdoctoral researchers with an opportunity to present their work in an informal atmosphere. This year, the meeting was divided into four sessions entitled “Structure, Including Surfaces and Interfaces,” “Excitations and Vibrations,” “Large Scale Structures,” and “Disordered Materials and Muons.” Three keynote lectures by Paul Attfield (Cambridge), Andrew Boothroyd (Oxford), and Colin Bain (Oxford) provided an excellent overview of the current state of neutron science. Fifteen contributed talks were presented, all of a uniformly high standard, covering many aspects of neutron scattering and muon spectrosCOPY.

摘要:
The fourth workshop in the series devoted to the investigation of fundamental interactions and symmetries as manifested in the physics of reactor neutrons and neutrinos was held at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), Grenoble, from October 22–24, 1998 and was sponsored by the ILL and the city of Grenoble. More than 100 scientists from I I countries around the world attended the “Particle Physics with Slow Neutrons” workshop.

摘要:
A workshop to promote the use of neutron scattering i n the UK biochemistry, biological. and biotechnology research community was held at Cosener's House, Abingdon from November 9–10, 1998. Sponsored by theCLRC's ISIS pulsed neutron facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, i t attracted some 49 participants from a range of university departments, including biochemistry, biophysics, pharmacy, veterinary science, other specialist centers (e.g. Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell–Ma-trix Research), industry (Glaxo Wellcome, Roche), and representatives froni the BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council).

摘要:
The Institute of Solid State Physics (ISSP), University of Tokyo, international symposia have been held since 1989 in either one or two year time intervals and always focus on timely topics in solid state physics. The 1998 symposium (and the seventh in theseries) was devoted to neutron scattering and was held on the Roppongi campus from November 24–27, 1998. The program consisted of plenary and topical sessions of mostly invited talks and two poster sessions of contributed papers. In total, 158 papers (26 invited and 132 contributed) were presented in the symposium and the proceedings will be published i n aspecial volume of theJournal of Physics and Chemistry of Solids.

摘要:
From January 14–15. 1999, a scientific workshop on opportunities for neutron scattering in magnetic fields up to 30-tesla was held i n Los Alamos, under the joint sponsorship of LANSCE. the Center for Materials Science, and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL is a three-center program based at Tallahassee and Gainesville in Florida and Los Alamos in New Mexico). The context of this meeting is that the NHMFL and LANSCE are constructing a unique new pulsed water-cooled split-pair magnet system specifically designed for neutron scattering studies. The design goals have been to achieve a 30-Tpeak field, with 2.3 ms semi-sinu-soidal pulse length, a magnet repetition rate of 2Hz, a fully illuminatedhiewed sample size of 5mm, a 20-mm clear bore in the magnet, ± 4° vertical divergence, and 4 × 73° horizontal divergence. The magnet and power supply were described by Chuck Mielke (NHMFL-Los Alamos), while two new high-intensity instruments that are likely homes for the magnet were described by Mike Fitzsimmons (LANSCE) and Collin Broholm (Johns Hopkins University).

摘要:
The committee of the European Neutron Scattering Association (ENSA) met for its tenth meeting in San Sebastian, Spain from January 25–26, 1999. The meeting was in part held jointly with the second meeting of the EU Round Table and served as an appropriate anniversary of ENSA, which was formed at a meeting i n Madrid on December 12, 1994.

摘要:
An informal workshop entitled “Polarized3He in Neutron Scattering” (PHINS). organized by Tom Gentile, Mike Snow and colleagues, was held in late January 1999 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research (the NCNR) i n Gaithersburg, Maryland. For many years it has been known to the neutron scattering community that polarized3He holds promise for polarizing and analyzing neutrons. Significant advances i n the production and handling of polarized3He gas, motivated by polarized3He targets for nuclear and high energy physics, has now made this possibility a reality.

摘要:
Small angle scattering is a wellestablished technique used to characterize structures ranging from nanoscopic (1 nm) to microscopic (a few microns) scales. A combination of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) provides complementary (contrast) structural information in a myriad of systems belonging to hard and soft, as well as biological, matter. From February 12–13, 1999, a joint ESRF-ILL-CEA workshop was held at the ILL and organized by T. Zemb (CEA-Saclay), B. Demt (ILL), 0. Diat (CEA, Grenoble), and T. Narayanan (ESRF). The purpose of this workshop was to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art instruments existing at ESRF and ILL to the current and prospective users.
