Readers ofNeutron Newswill be familiar with neutron scattering in Austria from the chart of the scattering lengths that was recently featured as a “centerfold” of NN and prepared in a large part by our Austrian colleagues. Now it appears that a new initiative may start in Austria and the surrounding countries of central Europe and result in the building of a large spallation neutron source.

An International Workshop on Neutron Scattering and the Radiation Physics of Solids was held in Zarechny near Ekaterinburg, Russia from March 18–23, 1993. It consisted of two simultaneous events: the XI1 Workshop on the Applications of Neutron Scattering to Solid State Physics and a Session of the Scientific Council of theRussian Academy of Sciences on the Radiation Physics of Solids.

The question of the future of pulsed sources in the US has been a subject of debate ever since the first experiments were performed at Argonne some 15 years ago. Clearly such sources have a “bright” future, they can give intense short pulses of neutrons that are well-matched to time-of-flight techniques. Under the best of circumstances the effective intensity can be the peak rather than time-averaged intensity of the source. There are four such sources in the world: at KENS in Japan, IPNS at Argonne, LANSCE at Los Alamos and ISIS at the Rutherford Laboratory, UK. Now that IPNS is some 10 times weaker than ISIS, and LANSCE is set to close (see separate story on page 29) because of the lack of funding for the LAMPF nuclear accelerator, the US situation in pulsed sources has become gloomy. The Kohn Report in the US (see the Editorial by John Axe in the previous issue) recommended that a design study for a new pulsed source (of nominal power 1 MW—some six times larger than ISIS) be started immediately, and that the scientific case be assembled. This was the motivation for the present workshop, which was attended by approximately 100 scientists from May 13–16, 1993 at Argonne National Laboratory.

In May 1993, the first in a series of Euroconferences organized within the Human Capital and Mobility programme of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) was arranged at Studsvik, Sweden, by the Studsvik Neutron Research Laboratory (NFL). According to the CEC objectives, a Euroconference should be a meeting at the cutting edge of scientific or technical knowledge and it should give young and promising European researchers, through their active participation in such a meeting, the possibility to benefit from contacts with high level scientists. In order to achieve this goal the international organizing committee, headed by Ulf Dahlborg, NFL and Stockholm, and consisting of members from Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, decided that the first Euroconference at Studsvik should not be too large, but that the intimate character of the meeting was more important. Thus, the maximum number of participants was set at about 70. Out of these, the participation of 22 youngresearchers, the majority of them coming from less-favored regions in Europe, was completely financed by the CEC, but the conference was also co-sponsored by the Swedish Natural Research Council. It was also considered by the committee to be a very important task of the Euroconference to show to the young scientists, some of whom did not have any experience in the use of the neutron scattering technique, what they may achieve by adding this technique to their research arsenal.

Following the success of the first workshop on “Dynamics of Disordered Materials” held in September 1988, a second workshop took place in Grenoble from March 22–24, 1993 with the objective of reviewing the considerable progress made. The meeting was jointly organized by the Institut für Festkörper-forschung of the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. The proceedings of the workshop will be published at the end of 1993 as a special issue ofPhysica Aand will contain 13 review articles and 44 contributed papers in both theory and experiments on disordered materials, addressing in particular the dynamics of glasses and the glass transition.

摘要:
The neutron depolarization technique is based on the change of polarization of a polarized neutron beam in three dimensions after transmission through magnetic substances. This change, caused by Larmor precession in individual domains, yields the mean domain size, the mean square direction cosines of the domains and the mean magnetization. The method is complementary to other neutron scattering techniques with respect to the size of the inhomogeneities studied, as well as the dynamic range accessible. The examples treated wil be: recording tapes, magnetic powders and superconductors.

C60(buckminsterfullerene) is the most well-known, the most stable, the most readily available, and in many respects, the most interesting member of a recently discovered class of pure carbon molecules known as the fullerenes (1). A method of making macroscopic quantities of fullerene mixtures was described in late 1990 (2), and since that time many scientists have been investigating the properties of C60the higher fullerenes, and their various compounds and derivatives. To date most of the neutron scattering research on these materials has been carried out either at the 20 MW research reactor of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NET) (3), or at the ISIS spallation source, Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory (RAL) (4). In this article we shall describe the research that has interested and occupied us the most, namely diffraction and low energy inelastic scattering studies of solid C60,. Much of the work that we omit is discussed in two recently published reviews (5,6).
