摘要:
The 1998 annual regional workshop on Utilization of Research Reactors was held i n Yogyakarta from February 8–11. 1999 and was followed by a sub-workshop on Small Angle Neutron Scattering in Serpong from February 12–14, 1999. These activities were a continuation of a long series held since 1992. Initially the workshop was planned to be held in Jakarta in November 1998, but due to the political situation at that time i n Jakarta, the organizers postponed i t and moved i t to a more quiet place i n central Java, southeast of Jakarta.

The workshop, requested by the ILL'S scientific council, was organized by C.-H. de Novion, LLB Saclay, and Alan Hewat, ILL.

The 8th JournCes de la Diffusion Neutronique (JDN8), arranged by the SociCtC Franpise de la Neutronique (SFN), was held at La Grande Motte from May 19 to 21, 1999. The active meeting was locally organized by Francois Fillaux from the Laboratoire de Dynamique, Interactions et Réactivité (CNRS, Thiais) and preceded by a successful school on Quasielastic Neutron Scattering. which was organized by Marc Bée from the University of Grenoble. The organizers made a noticeable effort to encourage the participation of young scientists and most of the “students” of the thematic school attended the meeting.

The Third Spanish Neutron Scattering School was held from June 2–5, 1999 in Oviedo, principality of Asturias, Spain. The purpose of this school was to introduce new and potential neutron scattering users to the various and different aspects of this powerful technique in the study of condensed matter.

In October 1995, with the closeout of the nuclear physics user program and the increased national need for neutrons, Los Alamos National Laboratory refocused the mission of its linear accelerator complex. The new mission called for the development and use of spallation neutron sources for research and applications. As a result, the accelerator complex formerly known as the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) is now called the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). LANSCE, an acronym that formerly referred to the Manuel Lujan Jr. Neutron Scattering Center (now the Lujan Center), consists of a high-power 800–MeV proton linear accelerator (linac), a Proton Storage Ring (PSR), neutron production targets at the Lujan Center and the Weapons Neutron Research (WNR) facility, a Proton Radiography (PRad) Facility, a highpower materials irradiation area (LASREF), and an isotope production facility (IPF). With the ability to produce protons and neutrons, LANSCE is ideal for research in condensed matter science and engineering, accelerator science, nuclear science, and radiography. LANSCE uses these research capabilities to contribute to the Department of Energy Stockpile Stewardship Program and to support a national user program open to scientists from universities, industry, and federal laboratories. Correlated-electron materials are those whose properties cannot be described fully by one-electron bandstructure calculations or, stated another way, are those in which many-body electron physics is crucial to their properties. They include heavy-fermion (f-electron) systems, high-Tcand other unconventional superconductors, and colossal-magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites. LANSCE and its users have a broad program in this area, and we give three examples of work performed in the last two years using the HIPD powder diffractometer, the SCD single-crystal diffractorneter, and the high-resolution chopper spectrometer PHAROS: the magnetic and crystallographic structures of UPd2Pb, the quadrupolar Kondo system PrAgJn. and the twolayer CMR compounds La2−2xSr1+2×Mn207.

摘要:
The modification of the surface properties of solids by complex fluid coatings is ubiquitous in our modern world. However, many fundamental questions about the solid/coating interface remain to be answered such as: (1) how does the surface quality vary with time, (2) what affects the adhesion between the surfaces. (3) how are the properties of thin complex fluid films influenced by the proximity of a solid interface, and (4) how may we modify these properties for particular functionality. In this paper, we report the results from two separate studies aimed at answering some of these questions. In each case, neutron reflectivity results obtained using the SPEAR reflectometer at the Manuel Lujan Jr. Neutron Scattering Center were used to probe the structure of the solid/complex fluid interface.

摘要:
Polycrystalline structural materials often contain inherent stresses that partition across the microstructure. From composites to fabricated components, stress and strain fields are often highly heterogeneous at the microstructural level, contrary to the inferences commonly made in continuum mechanics. Since these “residual” stresses are intimately linked to failure processes, one of the challenges in modeling constitutive behavior is to predict the magnitude of the stress heterogeneities in polycrystals and thus understand the implications.
