FAO is responsible for various projects in cereal growing that have a crop protection component. Within this the overall approach followed is along the lines of integrated pest control. The following field activities are briefly reviewed: research on and control of grain‐eating birds; breeding for stable resistance in wheat; integrated pest control in sorghum and millet; integrated pest control in rice‐growing in South and Southeast Asia; reduction of post‐harvest losses. A large number of insect species cause extensive injury to cereals, especially to wheat crops in the field in Turkey. Pentatomoid species are by far the most important of these. This paper is therefore devoted to a review of the pentatomoid pests which are encountered in wheat fields. A total of 25 species (Aeliaspecies excluded) are treated in this paper. Information is given for each species about pest status, host plants and principal research work, if any.

In an attempt to standardize methods of assessment ofEurygasterspp. andAeliaspp., some methods published in USSR, Romania and Turkey are reviewed and details given. These are: 1) counting overwintering adults in quadrats or along a line; 2) counting old adults in quadrats or by sweep net after migration; 3) counting nymphs in quadrats. Methods of assessing crop loss caused are: 1) counting attacked stems of young wheat; 2) counting attacked ears; 3) identification and counting of attacked grain at harvest; 4) caging different numbers of nymphs and adults, and taking yields, grain weight, germination etc.; 5) assessing the effect on baking quality of flour etc. The effects of different numbers of insects per m2on yield are given. It is suggested that standardization of such methods would lead to improved cooperative studies between different countries.

Sunn pest (Eurygaster integriceps) is the most serious and widespread pest of cereals in south‐eastern Turkey. It is very important to estimate its spring populations, and the area possibly needing to be treated, a few months before they migrate to the fields. The field populations of the pest and the severity of epidemics can be forecast from the population density of overwintering adults per plant in the overwintering localities. To do this, surveys have been made since 1955 on 25 selected mountain sites. Parallel to these investigations, the population of overwintered adults per m2 in cereal fields has been determined in order to fix the area to be treated, since 1956. Un nombre important d'organismes vivants limitent, dans les conditions naturelles, les pullulations d'Eurygaster integriceps.L'inventaire exhaustif de ces auxiliaires reste généralement à faire, d'autant qu'il peut exister pour une espèce donnée des populations plus ou moins bien adaptées à cet hôte ou à des conditions écologiques données. Le choix étant fait, il reste à multiplier ces auxiliaires en très grand nombre. Cette production de masse peut être imaginée en recueillant des hôtes dans la nature, à partir d'hôtes de substitution vivants produits en laboratoire ou a partir de milieux synthétiques. II reste ensuite à conditionner ces auxiliares pour leur faire jouer leur fonction en temps opportun et pendant une durée convenable. La date et la décision de traitement dépendent de la détermination d'un seuil d'intervention. La distribution des parasites sur le champ est également à considérer et il y a lieu de rechercher un contrôle d'efficacité suffisamment sensible. Le renforcement des potentialités des auxiliaires doit également être examiné sur le plan de l'aménagement du milieu et sur celui d'une continuité de leur action dans le temps. The commonest and most important species ofAeliain Turkey isA. rostrata.It is a primary pest, especially in Central Anatolia. Two other species, namelyA. acuminateandA. syriaca, are secondary pests which damage wheat to some extent. The other species so far known from Turkey are of minor importance.

De 1886 à ce jour, les punaises (AeliaetEurygaster) causent d'importants degats sur les blés en Algérie.Aelia germari, en particulier, constitue un danger permanent dans les régions céréalières (Hauts‐Plateaux de l'Ouest et du Centre, Hautes‐Plaines de l'Est) qui sont caractérisées par un bioclimat subhumide ou semi‐aride, à hiver frais ou froid. L'etude de ces insectes a permis de constater de fortes similitudes bio‐écologiques entreAeliaau Maroc et en Algérie (hivernation en altitude, sous divers abris végétaux, invasion des céréales au printemps, deux générations par an, etc.). Cependant, les gîtes d'hiver desAeliad'Algérie se situent sur les mêmes étages bioclimatiques que les céréales. L'étude morphologique de l'appareil génital femelle a permis de découvrir des caractères hautement spécifiques chez lesEurygaster.Trois sous‐genres ont été distingués (austriaca, integriceps, hottentota).La synonymie d'E.testudinariaet d'E.sinicaa été mise en évidence. Aelia rostratais one of the most important pests of wheat, barley and rye in Central Anatolia. It overwinters as an adult in the mountains. It has one generation per year, with five moults. Egg‐laying capacity is on average 201.6 in the laboratory and 163.3 in the field. Eggs are attacked by seven species ofAsolcusandTrissolcusin Central Anatolia. Des six especes d'Aeliaprésentes en Espagne, seulesA. germarietA. rostrataprovoquent des dégâts importants dans les cultures céréalières, en Andalousie occidentale et en Vieille‐Castille respectivement.A. rostratahiberne surtout dans les montagnes (950‐1 200 m) du nord de la région, sur des plantes–refuges telles qu'Arctoslaphylos uva‐ursi, Avena elatior et Juniperus communis.Selon les conditions météorologiques, la migration vers les champs de céréales a lieu vers la mi‐mai. Normalement, la ponte se produit au début de juin et les adultes de la nouvelle génération retournent vers les lieux d'hibernation dés le début d'aout, l'espèce étant univoltine en Vieille‐Castille. La lutte chimique pratiquée depuis les années soixante était initialement basée sur des produits tels que le fenthion et le malathion, appliqués souvent par voie aérienne sur de grandes surfaces. Actuellement, la préférence va au trichlorfon, normalement épandu par poudrage terrestre seulement sur les foyers d'infestation. Les dates de traitement sont choisies afin d'éviter tout effet néfaste sur les oophages (Asolcus, Trissolcus, etc.)

Cereal crop production is one of the most important projects in the agricultural improvement programme for Turkey. Overall, wheat represents 61 % of the cereal crop. While wheat production was almost 4 million tons in 1950, this reached a limit of 10 million tons in 1970. A number of diseases continue to afflict the crop from time to time, causing heavy losses. The most important of these are: bunt (Tilletia foetidaandT. caries), loose smut (Ustilago nuda), rusts (Puccinia strilformis, P. graminisf. sp.tritici, P. reconditaf. sp.tritici), leaf blotch (Septoria tritici), root and foot rots (Fusariumspp.,Drechslera sorokiniana, Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides, Alternarla alternate, Sclerotiumspp. andRhizoctoniaspp.). The diseases appear all over the country. Average losses due to rusts in epidemics are estimated at about 30–35 % in the whole country. Annual losses from covered smut are about 15–20 %, and from loose smut from 0.1 % to almost 20 % depending on the weather conditions of the year, on variety and on locality. Root rots have gained importance in some places, especially in Thrace in the last few years. In addition to the above diseases, several others occur occasionally but are of minor importance: powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminisf. sp.tritici), dwarf smut (Tilletia contraversa), flag smut (Urocystis tritici), take‐all (Gaeumannomyces graminis) and a wheat mosaic virus (recently observed in a province of Central Anat
