The use of a plastic bag as a closed container to screen for resistance in potatoes to potato cyst nematode in a controlled environment is described. Procedures to standardize the material tested and the inoculum used are outlined and the advantages of the system are discussed.

Le nématode des pins (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), très certainement originaire d'Amérique du Nord et introduit au Japon où il dévaste les forêts, a été signalé en 1979 surPinus pinasterdans le sud‐ouest de la France, en association avec des taches de dépérissement à propagation lente. Il s'agit en fait d'une souche morphologiquement proche deB. mucronatus, espèce non virulente décrite au Japon en 1979. Elle s'en distingue cependant par différents caractères biologiques, dont un pouvoir pathogène plus élevé vis‐à‐vis des jeunes pins et la possibilité de donner des croisements fertiles avecB. xylophilus.Elle pourrait jouer un rôle de sensibilisation à d'autres agents pathogènes. On doit done considérer queB. xylophilusn'est pas, comme on aurait pu l'espérer, endémique et peu virulent en France. Les risques d'introduction et d'extension du nématode des pins en Europe demeurent, par conséquent, entiers et redoutables. Les bois de conifères massifs, dans lesquels peuvent survivre les larves des insectes vecteurs, sont les voies d'introduction les plus à craindre et il existe, parmi les espèces européennes de xylophages, des insectes potentiellement capables de prendre le relais et de répandre la maladie qui est plus à redouter dans les régions àétés chauds. In 1984 a heavyBursaphelenchus xylophilusinfestation was observed in pinewood chips imported from USA and Canada into Finland. Because there are good reasons to suppose thatB. xylophilus, if spread to pine forests in North Europe, can cause significant damage, the import of coniferous wood into Finland has been prohibited since autumn 1984. In surveysB. xylophilushas not been found in roundwood or in chips imported from European countries into Finland. Neither hasB. xylophilusbeen detected in Finnish pine trees around harbours nor in paper mills handling North American wood.

In recent years, Norwegian forest industries have depended to some extent on imported coniferous timber and chips, which has to be debarked to fulfil phytosanitary requirements. However, the standard of debarking of logs and chips from North America is often low. Sunken areas on stems often develop from cankers or rot around knots, and often escape debarking. Besides, even debarked, timber and chips may carry dangerous pests (Inonotus weirii, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus). Precautions should be taken after landing to hinder further spread of such dangerous organisms.

Serious concern about the pinewood nematode,Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, and the pine wilt disease arose in 1984 when the nematode was discovered in wood chips imported for the Finnish pulp industry. It has been questioned whether this nematode could establish itself and actually damage pine trees under Nordic conditions. It seems likely thatB. xylophiluscould reproduce in Nordic forest lands. It is also likely that potential vector insects are present and could be functional in the establishment and epidemic development of the disease. Although temperatures in Nordic areas hardly seem conducive to pine wilt disease, other factors may contribute to disease expression. Research is needed on interactions of stress factors, particularly temperature and soil moisture, in the expression of pine wilt disease. A better understanding of these interactions would aid in evaluating the risk connected with an accidental introduction of the nematode into Nordic countries and provide a sound basis for trade regulations. At present, there are reasons to be most restrictive concerning any possible means of introduction ofB. xylophilus.

Several species of microscopic fungi have been associated with canker diseases of wild and cultivated species ofCupressusand related genera.Seiridium cardinalewas first reported in Europe (France) in 1944 and then spread to other countries, causing what at present is the major disease of cypress in Europe. Over the last two decades, heavy losses have been caused to the nursery industry, to cypress plantations used for forestation and windbreaks as well as to ornamental cypresses. The death of millions of trees has devastated the traditional and beloved landscape of areas where cypresses constitute a major element of the vegetation.Lepteutypa cupressi(anamorphSeiridium cupressi) has recently been reported in Greece (Kos). It had already caused considerable losses on cypress plantations in other geographical areas (Africa, Australia, Oceania). Some taxonomic aspects of the pathogen are discussed. The introduction ofL. cupressiinto the Mediterranean area, whereS. cardinalehas already spread, not only represents a serious threat to European cypress plantations, but also complicates the efforts made up to now towards the selection of resistant clones and the improvement of genetic resistance of the Mediterranean cypressC. sempervirenstoS. cardinale.Thus, immediate action is required in order to eradicate the existing foci and to avoid further spread of the disease.Seiridium unicornewas first described in the USA in 1878 and then recorded again in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. The host range of this pathogen is not restricted to Cupressaceae and includes plants belonging to eight families. It seems that the canker disease due toS. unicorneis not so serious as that caused byS. cardinaleorL. cupressi. L. cupressihas probably been misidentified asS. unicornein records of epidemics in East Africa and other areas of the world.

Un gros effort de méthodologie a permis de standardiser les techniques d'inoculation et de notation du chancre cortical du cyprès selon les stades de son évolution: en phase I, l'agressivité deSeiridium cardinale; en phase II, la réaction de l'hôte et les néoformations tissulaires. Réalisés sur de jeunes arbres, les tests permettent de juger le comportement en 2 ou 3 ans, ce qui est relativement rapide. Les réactions anatomiques à l'infection (néocollenchyme, barrière de suber) caractérisent la capacité de résistance. La sélection et l'amélioration génétique, menées conjointement en Grèce, en Italie et en France, progressent de façon accélérée et de nombreux clones ont déjàété mis en collection chez plusieurs espèces de cyprès. La variabilité du pouvoir pathogène deS. cardinaleest, jusqu'à présent, très faible, quelques différences d'agressivité ont été notées pour la zone méditerranéenne.S. cardinaleest présent très tôt sur les cônes et les graines de cyprès, sa transmission par la semence peut être inhibée. L'encre du chêne rouge (Quercus rubra) provoquée parPhytophthora cinnamomiest connue en France depuis 1948. L'auteur en décrit les symptômes et indique que ses conséquences sont essentiellement d'ordre technologique (dépréciation de la bille de pied). La maladie est localisée dans le sud‐ouest de la France. La comparaison entre la répartition actuelle et celle connue dans les années 50 ne permet pas de conclure à une extension de la maladie. La question de l'extension potentielle mérite une attention particulière, car le chêne rouge est une espèce utilisée de façon croissante; il paraît cependant vraisemblable que des barrières de nature climatique (température) peuvent limiter le développement géographique de la maladie.
