The present study measured F1 and F2 formant frequency levels of elderly and young male and female speakers producing the /i/, /æ/, /Λ/, /u/, and /a/ vowels in two carrier phrases. Results of a series of ANOVAs showed significant interactions of speaker age × vowel for both F1 and F2 formant frequencies for the male and female speakers. To obtain a perceptual reference for acoustic feature selection, 94 male and 124 female voices were categorized using the ratings of 6 clinicians on visual analog scales for pathology, roughness, breathiness, strain, asthenia, and pitch. Partial correlations showed that breathiness and roughness were the main determinants of pathology. The six-dimensional ratings (the six median scores for each voice) were categorized with the aid of the Sammon map and the self-organizing map. The five categories created differed with respect to the breathiness/roughness ratio and the degree of pathology.

The study presents the comparison of the effects of reverberation transmitted via single and combined channels (auditory, visual and tactile) on the speech of stutterers. The dependence of stuttering intensity and speech velocity upon reverberation time was determined. For all transmission channels the stuttering intensities and the speech velocities decreased with the increase in reverberation time. The results were analyzed statistically by means of the ANOVA method. It was proven that the corrective effects of visual reverberation and tactile reverberation were comparable. Reverberation transmitted via the auditory channel was more effective than when transmitted via the visual or tactile channels. Connecting the visual and tactile channels with the auditory channel has no influence on the effectiveness of reverberation.

The durational characteristics of 10 normal infant’s complete crying episodes are reported. The cries of each child were audiorecorded at 2 days postpartum and acoustically analyzed for overall occurrence of expiratory cry segments, inspiratory cry segments, and nonphonatory ‘pause’ segments. Maxillary advancement may result in movement of the posterior border of the hard palate with its soft palate attachment, which may cause impairment of velopharyngeal (VP) function. We examined VP function before and after Le Fort I osteotomy in 15 cleft lip and palate patients. The extent of maxillary advancement was measured by means of standard cephalometric radiographs taken before and after the operation. VP function was evaluated in terms of perceptual speech assessments, pressure-flow data and nasalance scores preoperatively and 2, 6 and 12 months after the operation. The results showed that maxillary advancement resulted in impairment of VP function in 4 (27%) of the patients.
