Tape recordings before and after successful voice therapy from 174 subjects with non-organic voice disorders (functional dysphonia) were analysed by longtime averaged voice spectrograms (LTAS). In female as well as in male voices there was a statistically significant increase in level in the first formant region of the spectra. In the female voices there was also an increase in level in the region of the fundamental. The LTAS were compared to the results of a perceptual evaluation of the voice qualities by a small group of expert listeners. There was no significant change of the LTAS in voices with negligible amelioration after therapy. In the voices, where the change after therapy was perceptually rated to be considerable, the LTAS showed only an increase in intensity, but the general configuration of the spectral envelope remained unchanged. There was only a weakly positive correlation between the quality ratings and parameters of the spectra.

We studied the effect occurring in close proximity before the phonation start and give an account of the microdramas taking place upon the glottis immediately before the phonation start in a group of individuals suffering from balbuties (60 children and adolescents from 9 to 14 years of age) and an equally large control group suffering from no such speech defect. In the group of children and adolescents with balbuties only less than 4% of the cases showed undisturbed regular phonation starts, whereas in the control group it was almost as much as 90%.

Les auteurs ont étudié l’utilisation des structures syntaxiques, des groupes syntagmatiques et des mots lexicaux dans les récits de 4e primaire recueillis dans 7 langues différentes de la CEE: allemand, anglais, castillan, Catalan, français, italien et portugais. Pour ce faire, ils ont analyse dans chaque langue les productions orales et écrites de 60 enfants constituant 2 classes ou 2 classes 1/2 selon le pays concerné. Pour l’ensemble la «situation de langage» est en moyenne du même ordre, même si certaines differences affectent ou enrichissent une langue plus particulièrement qu’une autre. Cette etude permet de situer à quel niveau se placent les enfants par rapport à leur langue et à leur classe et d’en déduire queues seront leurs possibilités par rapport à une autre langue en cas de nécessité. A standardized, perceptually based description of hoarseness is of importance for clinical purposes (e.g. therapy evaluation) as well as in research on voice disorders. The reliability and relevance of perceptual parameters are investigated. The GRBAS scale parameters quite well fit the criteria: low intrajudge and interjudge variance but high intervoice variance. The best correlation between judges (0.7) is found for the overall grade of severity. Impressions of the asthenicstrained voice quality are less consistent, but still show a significant interjudge correlation. The overall grade of severity seems to be mainly determined by the component breathiness. Roughness and breathiness are negatively correlated with each other. Tonus is correlated neither with roughness nor breathiness. The GRBAS profiles significantly differ between the different pathological groups.

Kinematic recordings of orofacial movements by means of electromagnetic articulography were performed in an akineticrigid Parkinsonian patient presenting with intermittent speech freezing in diadochokinesis tasks (rapid repetitions of the syllable /ta/). During freezing periods the patient produced a sustained /a/ instead of the required consonant-vowel sequences. The underlying articulatory trajectories were characterized by repetition rates amounting to 8-10 Hz concomitant with reduced movement amplitudes. Obviously, the undershooting of articulatory gestures failed to establish a sufficient occlusion of the vocal tract giving rise to the perceived speech freezing. In contrast, preserved diadochokinesis occurred at frequencies of 4–6 Hz. Most probably, the increased articulatory repetition rate reflects a pacing of orofacial movements by released tremor oscillations. Due to slowing of articulatory movements spastic dysarthrics can also present with missing syllabic modulation during oral diadochokinesis. The article gives one of the possible explanations of the complex event which may be registered when recording the vibrations from the thyroid cartilage in ventraldorsal direction during phonation and approximately in two octaves of the modal voice. The alternating displacement of the vibrating thyroid cartilage is caused apparently by the alternating increase and decrease in the resulting pressure force acting upon the vocal folds. For the time being the adduced hypothesis does not take into consideration specific reflex activity, in spite of the fact that it can probably be expected with lesions of the nervous system on the basis of the typically changed manifestations.
