摘要:
The study describes the relationship between quality of care and financial performance (operating profit margin) as it pertains to the nursing home industry. We found that nursing homes that produce better outcomes and process of care were able to achieve lower patient care costs and report better financial performance.

摘要:
This article uses the Miles and Snow typology of strategies to examine nursing facilities' strategic responses to their changing environment and whether strategic responses are associated with facilities performance in quality outcomes. The author hypothesizes that prospector nursing facilities will have the highest quality outcomes, followed by defender, analyzer, and reactor facilities.

摘要:
Debates about the relative advantages of health systems versus more loosely structured health networks have largely ignored issues of how these different organizational forms are governed. Based on comparisons of two large samples of health systems and health networks, our findings indicate that the majority of both types of organized delivery systems have governing bodies separate from those of affiliate organizations, high proportional representation by affiliate organizations, and similar board size.

摘要:
Empirical studies on diversity suggest that health care organizations have been slow to embrace diversity management. We propose that sensitivity to diversity, at the corporate level, moderates strategic decision making, which influences human resource management practices such as diversity initiatives. This study of 203 hospitals explored the relationships among organizational strategy, organizational sensitivity to diversity, and diversity management practices.

摘要:
This article investigates the effects of appealing hospital rooms on patient evaluations of hospital services. A field study contrasting appealing and typical rooms finds that appealing rooms result in more positive patient evaluations of physicians and nurses, as well as more favorable patient judgments of the service.

摘要:
Surprise can emanate from two sources: lack of sufficient information or knowledge and the basic dynamics of complex adaptive systems. The authors expand the traditional view of surprise with a complexity perspective that makes it possible to ask new questions and to consider new ways of understanding the world around us. They discuss creativity and learning as two strategies for capitalizing on the surprises that confront organizations.

摘要:
Primary care practices are complex adaptive systems facing the need to respond to internal and external uncertainty and surprise. For clinicians and practices to maximize their ability to proactively evolve as they respond to uncertainty and surprise, they need to understand that their practices are nonlinear systems and create the time and space for learning and reflection. This article provides principles for clinicians and staff for negotiating uncertainty and surprise in an ever-changing health care environment.

摘要:
Reframing surprise as an opportunity rather than as a threat can be facilitated when we recognize that efforts to deny, control, and prevent uncertainty operate as barriers to reframing. Removing the barriers requires trust and risk-taking among key stakeholders, especially among patients, physicians, and health care organizations.
