Although data suggest that multihospital systems are growing rapidly, more in-depth investigation is necessary to truly monitor the success of the systems approach. Cost effectiveness, quality of services and access are major factors in determining if the trend toward systems configurations should be encouraged or discouraged.

The HSA network could play more than a regulatory role in the health care industry, according to Higgins and Bruhn. Health promotion activities should become a major focus for the HSA's role in positive change and preventive care activities. As a counterpoint to Higgins’s and Bruhn's article, Mott asserts that while health promotion is a worthy issue, it cannot replace the issue of cost containment in the HSA’s view.

A complete knowledge of the patient populations’ characteristics provides the health care manager with answers to many patient needs. Health care facilities can change or strengthen staff to meet consumer expectations thanks to the information provided by psychographic data.

Employees of nonprofit hospitals are now able to organize and bargain collectively while under the protection and coverage of the National Labor Relations Act The signing of PL 93-360 in 1974 not only allowed these employees to unionize but has also helped to guarantee that adequate patient care activities continue in all privatesector health care institutions.
