摘要:
Pathology is a relatively new specialty in the history of medicine and borrows much from the clinical and basic sciences. The clinicopathologic correlation began with deceased (autopsy) and was later extended to the living (surgical pathology). Although the roots of surgical pathology began during the first half of the 19th century, this distinctive specialty evolved through many subsequent technical and scientific discoveries. This historical review will trace the advances in microscopy, histochemistry, and surgery in the later half of the 19th century and early 20th century that led to the development of modern surgical pathology.

摘要:
The analysis of a large number of tumor tissues with conventional techniques of molecular pathology is tedious and slow. The authors recently developed the tissue microarray technology that makes it possible to sample up to 1000 tumors on one glass slide, which then can be analyzed by fluorescence in situ hybridization, RNA in situ hybridization, or immunohistochemistry. The tissue microarray technology has the potential to significantly accelerate molecular studies that seek associations between molecular changes and clinicopathologic features of the cancer. Examples of potential applications for tissue microarrays include testing and optimization of probes and antibodies, the organization of large tissue repositories, and the facilitation of multicenter studies. Further, tissue microarrays can be used for educational purposes as well as to improve quality control and standardization of staining methods and interpretation. Tissue microarrays have become one of the most promising tools for the molecular and anatomic pathologist and will have many applications in cancer research, as well as in other fields of pathology. This review article gives an overview of current applications of tissue microarrays as well as possible future development of the technology.

摘要:
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are one of the most common malignancies, which, with early recognition, may be curable. These tumors represent a broad spectrum of disorders with many significant clinical, morphologic, and etiologic distinctions. The objective of this article is to review the important clinicopathologic features of SCC with particular emphasis on important recent developments, practical application, and their relevance to the practice of pathology. The most pertinent literature of the last 5 years was reviewed and capsulized. Appropriate histologic interpretation and clinical management of patients with cutaneous SCC requires a comprehensive understanding of the latest advances in the broad field of dermatopathology. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin represents a complex group of disease subtypes, each with its own characteristics, which may influence morphologic diagnosis as well as treatment and clinical management.

摘要:
In this subject review, a series of morphology-based and molecular markers were compared with urinary cytology for the detection of recurrent urothelial neoplasia. Among the various biomarkers reviewed, the average published sensitivity and specificity for the Bard BTA test was 60% and 77%; the NMP22 Test was 67% and 72%; the telomerase assay was 77% and 85%; and the microsatellite assay was 89% and 100%. DNA ploidy measurements and immunoassays designed to detect keratins, proteins, hyaluronidase, growth factors, cell adhesion molecules, fibrinogen degradation products, cell cycle regulators, and molecular markers were also included. Although the performance features of these biomarkers have varied and the cytologic methods to which they have been compared have not been standardized, several of the procedures have received considerable support from urologists as assisting them in the management of their patients.
