摘要:
AbstractThe widespread use of tractor trailers for the shipment of packaged products has brought about the need to be able to quantify accurately the nature of the shipping environment as it pertains to damage. The purpose of this study was to compare the levels of lateral and longitudinal vibration to vertical levels measured in the same truck trailer travelling over the average USA highway. Four truck‐trailer shipments, two with light loads and two with heavy loads, were instrumented with accelerometers and recording equipment. From the data acquired, power spectral density plots were developed. The results showed that below 20 Hz, lateral and longitudinal vibration levels were generally much lower than vertical levels, but at frequencies above 20 Hz, all three were similar. The more heavily loaded trucks showed higher lateral and longitudinal levels of vibration than the lightly loaded one

One of the main components of the aseptic machinery is the means of sterilizing the packaging material and the efficiency of this is of paramount importance. AbstractA new technique uses DCI‐Platine coupled to gas chromatography in order to measure the transfer rate of organic vapours through packaging materials. Experimental results are presented for ethyl acetate vapour through two polymer films, a vegetable parchment paper, and a coated paperboard. The films allow vapour mass transfer even at low vapour feed concentrations (i.e. the concentration expected in the package) whereas the paper and, especially, the paperboard, need higher feed concentration

摘要:
AbstractPolyethylene film packaging was investigated as to its use in preventing the browning of the peel of the pear variety 'Le Lectier' during distribution.The fruits were individually packaged in polyethylene bags, and were found to be superior to the usual paper‐packaged fruit or unpackaged fruit in that browning of the peel was reduced considerably, while the loss in weight or wilting also was reduced and the preservation of external freshness was excellent. However, the use of a perforated polyethylene bag was essential in order to prevent the browning of the flesh or core that occurred with unperforated polyethylene bags. This browning was considered to be a physiological disorder resulting from carbon dioxide, judging from the composition of the head‐space gas in the bag.The oxidative enzyme activity of the fruit was measured and an electron‐microscopic observation of the epidermis was carried out. As a result, it was clear that enzymatic activity increased markedly following ripening of the fruit and a structural defect was observed in the cuticular layer of the epid

AbstractPenetration of a motile microbe,Enterobacter aerogenes, was investigated through aseptic packages filled with milk, meat soup, sausage gravy and soft agar. Penetration was dependent on the microhole diameter and on the viscosity of the foodstuff in the package. The smallest microhole diameter permitting the passage ofE. aerogenesin this study was 5 μm when the packages were filled with milk and the microhole length was 40 μm. While the packages were filled with soft agar, meat soup and sausage gravy, the smallest penetrable microhole was 10, 20 and 25 μm in diameter, respectively. AbstractGas‐exchange packaging was applied to preserve freshness of rainbow trout fillets. The fillets were packaged in pouches of coextruded laminate (ethylene vinyl acetate/ polyvinylidene chloride‐polyolefin) with a carbon dioxide‐nitrogen gas mixture (N2: CO2= 6 : 4). Other fillets were wrapped with polyvinyl chloride film as a reference group. Changes in sensory score of colour and flavour,K‐valueand bacterial counts of the fillets were investigated during storage at 5°C.After 2 days the fillets wrapped with polyvinyl chloride film lost their gloss. In addition, an amine‐like odour was detected after 3 days. The gas‐packaged fillets, however, showed little change in colour, flavour and bacterial counts, and retained their fresh appearanc
