AbstractThis paper investigates the effect of load histories (static and dynamic) on the compression strength and shock absorption properties of corrugated fibreboard boxes. Experiments were set up in the laboratory to simulate compressive forces and drops that occur during normal transportation of packaged products. The results show that static compression forces (not to failure) do not have significant influence on the compressive strength or shock absorption of corrugated boxes, and that dynamic compression forces do have a significant influence on these performance factors. This study was limited to one box size and style and suggests that more extensive research be undertaken to determine the effects of previous loading histories on a broad range of box configurations.

摘要:
AbstractThis work presents the development of a method to measure the ethylene permeability of plastic films used in vegetable packaging, by exploiting the adsorption and desorption properties of a synthetic sodium zeolite. In order to establish the best conditions and requirements for the procedure, the ethylene adsorption and desorption by the zeolite was studied at different temperatures and partial pressures. The method was used to study the ethylene permeability of two common cling films (EVA and plasticized PVC) and shown to be both economical and accurate.

AbstractThe long‐term influence of electron beam irradiation on food packaging materials (OPP) was studied. After irradiating the material at dose levels of 2, 5 and 10 kGy, we have shown a partial or complete disappearance of the antioxidant (Irganox 1010 and Irgafos 168) over time and a release of five new compounds resulting from antioxidant degradation. All of these degradation compounds have been identified and quantitatively analysed in relation to post‐irradiation time and absorbed dose.
