AbstractAn animal model system was established for immunotherapy of lung cancer using line‐1 lung carcinoma in Balb/cR mice and xenogeneic lymphocytes from New Zealand white (N2W) rabbits. The immunization schedule consisted of footpad and subcutaneous injections of 1 × 108viable line‐1 cells into two rabbits, twice at a weekly interval. Two other rabbits were maintained as source of unsensitized lymphocytes. All rabbits were bled on day 14 at which time 45 mice were divided into three groups of 15 for both transplantation of 1 × 104viable line‐1 cell (subcutaneously) and treatment with 1) control saline, 2) 2.5 × 106unsensitized lymphocytes, and 3) 2.5 × 106sensitized lymphocytes. These treatments were repeated twice at weekly intervals. Results were evaluated four weeks after transplant and initial treatment. Tumor developed in 13/15 control mice, 15/15 treated with unsensitized lymphocytes, and 7/15 with sensitized‐lymphocyte injection. The mean tumor weight for group 1 (control mice) was 1.38 ± 0.22 gm (SEM), group 2 was 2.09 ± 0.25 gm, and 0.56 ± 0.28 gm for group 3. AbstractA comparative study of breast cancer was made among black and white populations admitted to two inner‐city hospitals from 1971 through 1976, inclusive. There were 306 patients in the study group of which 162 were black and 144 were white. Age, sex, color, duration of illness, different quadrants of breast involved, staging of cancer, histological diagnosis, treatment given, and incidence of recurrence were studied in each group. AbstractThis investigation was designed to study the myoepithelum of the human mammary carcinoma. Tissues were obtained from 30 infiltrating ductal carcinomas. Under light microscope, there were no significant changes noted in the myoepithelium. Glutaraldehyde‐fixed tissues were examined under electron microscope. In infiltrating carcinoma the myoepithelial cells contained increased endoplasmic reticulum, abundant microfilaments, secretory granules and intracytoplasmic duct formation. AbstractObstruction to swallowing from recurrent gastric cancer following total gastrectomy or when the tumor is initially unresectable presents a major surgical challenge. Resection of the recurrence or various bypass procedures are indicated, when technically feasible, unless widespread metastases are found. A useful palliative approach for obstructed patients with a limited prognosis is the use of a Celestin endoesophageal tube. This report describes the indications for and method of insertion in two typical clinical situations. Anchoring the tube to the anterior abdominal wall prevents proximal migration of the prosthesis, a complication which occurred six months later in a patient in whom this was not possible.

AbstractThe value of multiphasic automated laboratory tests in differentiating stages of malignancy and in detecting recurrence of cancer was studied. Chemical SMA‐12 tests (including calcium, phosphate, glucose, BUN, uric acid, cholesterol, total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (AP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and SGOT) and hematological SMA‐4 tests (including hematocrit, hemoglobin, WBC and RBC counts) were performed in 1,578 patients. Baseline data obtained from 582 patients with benign, and 996 patients with malignant, lesions were subdivided according to age, sex, primary site, and extent of cancer. With advancing stages of cancer, there was a significant increase of AP and LDH, but decrease of albumin and hemoglobin. AbstractInvolvement of nose and maxilla by fibrosarcoma is extremely rare. Only a few cases of fibrosarcoma arising in this region are reported in the world literature. Two cases of fibrosarcoma are described, and the literature relating to this disease entity is briefly reviewed. Salient features helping in the diagnosis and management of fibrosarcoma also are highlighted.

AbstractUDP‐galactose:N‐acetylglucosamine galactosyltransferase (GT) is a membrane‐bound enzyme active in the biosynthesis of the carbohydrate moiety of glyco‐proteins and glycolipids. A soluble form of GT, present in human serum, has recently been found to be elevated in the presence of various neoplasms. In this study, GT levels were measured in randomized serum samples obtained from normal controls (group I, n = 49), patients with benign breast disease (group II, n = 46), disease controls (group III, n = 50), patients with primary breast carcinoma (group IV, n = 53), and untreated metastatic breast cancer (group V, n = 23). Although substantial serum GT elevations were observed in individual control patients with active inflammatory or metabolic diseases, the mean GT levels were signficantly higher in the groups with breast carcinoma (P<0.001, 0.001, 0.02; P<0.001, 0.001, 0.001 for groups IV and V vs groups, 1, II, and III, respectively). Furthermore, when serum GT levels were correlated with the preoperative clinical stage of breast cancer, significant elevations were found in 14.3% (3/21) of stage I, 66.7% (8/12) of stage II, 78.6% (11/14) of stage III, and 96.5% (28/29) of stage IV patients. These data indicate that serum GT levels are elevated in the presence of breast carcinoma and that the enzyme elevations correlate positively with the clinical stage of disease. AbstractAn inverse relationship exists between dietary selenium (Se) concentration and the incidence of human breast cancer. The addition of Se to the diet has been shown to decrease the incidence of spontaneous murine mammary tumors. We compared the serum Se concentrations in breast cancer patients with those of women without breast cancer. Serum was collected from 35 women with breast cancer. Nineteen of these women had infiltrating ductal carcinoma and two had Paget disease of the nipple. Nine women had lymph nodal metastases at the time of mastectomy, four had definite evidence of metastatic disease when the blood samples were drawn, and the disease process of one patient was unclassified. Samples from 27 women known to be free of breast cancer were used as controls. The difference noted between the mean serum Se concentrations of breast cancer patients and controls were found to be significant.
