AbstractWe studied 145 cases of larynx cancer in relation to their etiology, methods of treatment, and results. It was found that better results were obtained with a combination of radiotherapy and surgery. Any postradiational edema of the larynx should subside within 3 months. If this edema persists or progresses, it always means residual disease in the submucosal plane. We have now improved our results by using intravenous Bleomycin concurrently.

AbstractData on 17 potentially useful factors from 152 women undergoing radical mastectomy for operable breast cancer were analyzed in order to determine the effect of each on survival and their relative importance. Only four, clinical stage, clinical and pathological lymph node involvement, and appearance of recurrence and metastases, proved to be of significant prognostic value. Axillary nodal involvement was the main single determinant of survival. Multiple regression analysis, based on factor analysis of the original input variables, was able to account for 34% of the variance in survival and is thus of only very limited use as a predictive instrument in the clinical management of prospective patients.

AbstractA case of malacoplakia in a cadaveric renal allograft is presented. Infection and immunotherapy are presented as possible etiologic factors. The pathogenesis of malacoplakia is discussed with reference to histologic findings in this specific case. The suggestion is made that an altered macrophage response in this disease is the reason for this granulomatous lesion of the bladder.

AbstractThirty‐two patients with histologically proved metastatic malignant melanoma of the brain were evaluated. Intracranial surgery was performed in 19 and was considered not indicated in 13 patients. Following intracranial surgery, satisfactory improvement in neurologic deficits was observed in 14 (74%) patients. The median survival after occurrence of brain metastases was 5–6 months (1 – 15 months) for the surgical group; and for the nonsurgical group, patients with multiple brain metastases and multiple visceral involvement did not survive beyond a median of 1 month (range 0.5–6 months). Intratumor hemorrhage with substantial intracerebral hematoma was present in 7 (41%) out of 17 craniotomies. The overall incidence of intratumor hemorrhage found at autopsy was 59% for the entire series. Among ail the cases with intratumor hemorrhage, only 2 patients who received chemotherapy after craniotomy developed thrombocytopenia with fatal intracranial hemorrhage. The latter cause‐and‐effect correlation could not be assessed in the other patients.As a result of this retrospective study, we have observed that patients with malignant melanoma and evidence of single brain metastasis without multiple visceral involvement seemed to benefit more from palliative surgery. AbstractIn vivo and in vitro immunologic cross reactivity between SV40 virus transformed prostatic tissue and fetal antigens of LVG/LAK strain hamsters has been studied. The hamsters immunized with fetal antigens demonstrated significant resistance to tumor growth. Complement‐dependent humoral cytotoxicity of target SV40 tumor cells in microtest plates was used to demonstrate the presence of significant antibody titer in fetal‐immunized hamsters. When the immune sera were absorbed with SV40 transformed prostatic tissue, cytotoxicity indices were markedly lower than with the unabsorbed immune sera. The transformed prostatic tissue was found to have an elevated tartrate inhibited acid phosphatase indicative of the presence of epithelial components in the transformed tissue. These experiments demonstrate in vivo and in vitro cross reactivity between fetal antigens and tumor associated antigens of transformed prostatic tissue.
