AbstractThe association between primary hyperparathyroidism and previous irradiation was investigated in two study groups. Among 36 patients with hyperparathyroidism, 4 (11%) knew of having received radiation therapy. In the second group of 323 patients with a history of radiation exposure and nodular thyroid disease, 4 (1%), thus far, were found to have hyperparathyroidism.

AbstractPeripheral blood specimens were obtained from 50 patients with various stages of breast cancer (I‐II = 7, III = 6, IV = 24, treated and NED = 13), and 20 biochemical tests were performed. There are significant differences of hemoglobin, LDH, SGPT, serum protein, albumin, and alpha globulin values between patients with early (I, II, NED) and late (III, IV) lesions. Among patients with stage IV diseases, those patients with bony metastases had significantly higher values of alkaline phosphatase, alpha‐1 globulin, IgA, and C‐reactive protein than those with nonosseous lesions. AbstractTwo cases of squamous cell carcinoma with sarcomatoid stroma are presented. One tumor was located in the soft palate that metastasized to a neck lymph node; the epithelial and the spindle cell component of the tumor at the primary as well as at the metastatic site showed ultrastructural features of squamous cell carcinoma. AbstractFibrin Seal (consisting of fibrinogen, cold insoluble globulin, factor XIII, antiplasmin, platelet growth factor, thrombin, and calcium chloride), cryoprecipitate, at Avitene were applied to areas of pulmonary wedge resections in dogs and cynomologus monkeys in an attempt to stop bleeding and air leakage. In the control groups, hemorrhage persisted. Comparing the three hemostatic agents used, Avitene was the least effective followed by cryoprecipitate. Fibrin Seal was most effective. In all cases, it eliminated both air leakage and bleeding.

AbstractControl of cancer through risk reduction and early detection has great potential. Roswell Park Memorial Institute's Prevention‐Detection Center addresses a community need for health promotion, disease prevention, and cancer detection as well as providing opportunity for research on the efficacy of such a program. The Prevention‐Detection Center offers a range of services including education, genetic counseling, risk assessment, counseling in smoking cessation and other means of risk reduction, and screening for cancer. It is also involved in evaluation of new technologies of cancer detection such as the ultrasonic examination of the breast. A community outreach program is aimed at attracting high‐risk populations. In its first eighteen months of operation; the Prevention‐Detection Center detected 24 confirmed cancers. The Center is used by approximately 60 persons each week. Interviews with persons using the clinic over a two‐week period indicate that most are motivated to attend because a relative has had cancer or because of a belief in the importance of regular checkups. Client satisfaction with the clinic is high. AbstractFour of 46 patients with carcinoid tumors and the carcinoid syndrome developed severe life‐threatening diarrhea. AbstractOf 191 case reports submitted to the National Soft Tissue Sarcoma Registry, 131 qualified for inclusion. Fifty‐two percent were males; 80% were whites. AbstractA comparative study of α‐fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in serum was made by radioimmunoassay in 66 patients with pancreatobiliary disease with and without obstructive jaundice, biliary concentrations of these proteins were assayed in 12 patients with benign and 7 patients with malignant disease. There was no statistical difference in serum AFP between these two groups but there was a difference in serum CEA. Although CEA and AFP in bile in both groups were higher than in serum there was no statistical difference in serum CEA and AFP in patients with and without obstructive jaundice in either benign or malignant disease. In benign disease, patients with inflammation had higher serum CEA than normal. Although there was no statistical difference in serum CEA in patients with and without liver metastases, the serum CEA in liver metastases was significantly higher than in benign disease.We concluded that AFP is unlikely to be important in the assessment or management of patients with cancers other than those derived from the liver or yolk sac, and that the elevation of serum CEA in patients with malignant pancreatobiliary disease either with or without obstructive jaundice occurs mainly in the presence of widespread malignancy, especially in liver metastas
