AbstractThyroglobulin (TG) is a glycoprotein which has been found to be produced by almost all nonmedullary thyroid cancers, and is present in elevated levels in the serum of most patients with metastatic thyroid cancer. It has long been a clinical impression that many metastatic thyroid cancers are “responsive” to TSH suppression as manifested by a decrease in the size and/or symptoms of the tumor. Five athyroid patients with metastatic thyroid cancer were studied to determine the effect of TSH stimulation on their serum TG levels and attempt to correlate this effect with their clinical response. Three of the five patients showed a definite rise in their serum TG once serum thyroxine (T4) replacement was withdrawn, which correlated with an increase in TSH, and two of these patients have had no progression of their disease while on T4suppression. The remaining two patients have shown no change in their TG levels after T4withdrawal, and both have had progression of their metastatic disease while on T4suppression. Thus, we see that in some patients, TG production by their metastatic thyroid cancer is responsive to TSH suppression, and there is some suggestion that TSH‐responsive cancers are less aggressive; but it will require further studies to determine

AbstractA study of 78 cases of base of the tongue cancer treated surgically for control of disease at the primary site is presented. AbstractThis study was designed to investigate the effects of exogenous L‐triiodothyronine (LT3) and reserpine administration on the induction and stimulation of 3‐methylcholanthrene (3‐MC) mammary tumors. Two hundred‐fifty‐eight 30‐day‐old virgin 100 gm Sprague Dawley rats were divided into eight groups. Groups I–IV received either reserpine, LT3, both, or saline 22 days after tumor induction with 3‐MC. Groups V–VIII were pretreated with either reserpine, LT3, or both for 29 days prior to tumor induction, and treatment was continued after tumor induction in all except Group VII. All rats were observed for tumor growth and sacrificed at seven months. Reserpine administration resulted in a protective effect against tumor induction in all groups in which it was used, with the most striking effects observed in the pretreated groups. Early LT3stimulation of tumor formation was reversed by simultaneous administration of reserpine. Prolonged administration was unnecessary when both agents were administered prior to 3

AbstractA microradioisotopic staphylococcal protein A assay was applied to the serological evaluation of preoperative sera from brain tumor patients. The assay was performed in Terasaki plates, and a stainless steel punch and multiholed die facilitated sample prearation. Using allogeneic astrocytoma target cells, 15/19 of the brain tumor patients' sera were reactive, compared to 1/21 controls. 0/7 nonmalignant brain disease patients' sera were positve, and 5/20 sera from patients with epithelial malignancies. The brain tumor sera were not reactive against a rectal cancer cell line.

AbstractAn intestinal fistula is a life‐threatening complication when associated with the treatment of pelvic cancer. Such fistulae arise in 10% of patients treated by the combination of aggressive surgery and radiation therapy. AbstractA nonspecific immunosuppressive factor, lymphocyte immunosuppressive substance (LIS), has been correlated with cancer patients. Significant suppression of IgM antibody production of sheep erythrocyte immune Swiss mice lymphocytes was found when the immune lymphocytes were treated with cultured peripheral blood lymphocyte supernates of tumor‐bearing patients. A lesser amount of LIS activity was also demonstrated with patients who had cancer in the past, but were clinically free of disease at the time of testing. AbstractFifty‐one evaluable patients with liposarcomas were reviewed. Two‐thirds of the patients were referred after local recurrence. One‐third with primary surgery at RPMI had local recurrence rate of 31.6%. Overall, one or more local recurrences presented in 78% of patients. Pulmonary metastases occurred in 45%, while liver metastases in 13.6%.Most common primary sites were the lower extremity, followed by the retroperitoneal area and upper extremity.Median survival is better for upper and lower extremities than other areas (P<0.01). The median survival was longer in the group that received radiation after resection although the difference was not statistically significant. AbstractMalignant mesothelioma can be a confusing disease, resembling either carcinoma or sarcoma. Although it usually causes death rapidly by local and regional spread, distant metastases may be seen more frequently as more effective therapy controls local disease and prolongs life.Our patient's local and then regional mesothelioma was controlled by aggressive treatment, which allowed him nearly two years of productive life before a metastasis to the right infraorbital region occurred. He died shortly there‐after with widespread metastases.This is the first reported case of mesothelioma metastatic to the face.
