AbstractA case of bilateral seminoma of the the testis is presented that occured after a lag period of six years following right orchiectomy, even with correct cobalt therapy. The question of early detection of seminoma in the other testis is posed. A common consensus for repeat biopsies to detect new tumor growth should be determined.

AbstractAn animal model of bowel cancer, induced by 1,2‐dimethyl hydrazine, has been developed in the Nb rat. Invasive polypoid carcinomas of the colon were noted in nine rats surviving 29 weeks after the carcinogen was first administered. Two of these nine rats also developed duodenal carcinomas. AbstractA case of endobronchial granular cell tumor and an adenocarcinoma in the same lobe of the lung are presented. A review of the literature documents 2 cases where there was coexistence of a bronchogenic carcinoma and a granular cell tumor. The different theories regarding the origin of granular cell tumors are considered. The treatment of choice would be that indicated for the carcinoma irrespective of the granular cell tumor.

AbstractSince pancreatic cancer is still increasing and has a poor prognosis, there is great interest in improving treatment results by combined modality approaches. This paper considers the most appropriate studies to analyze the status of treatment and future implications for surgeons. With new radiation sources and more sophisticated treatment plans, intra‐ and post‐operative radiotherapy now has an established role in local tumor control. Combination chemotherapy has yielded response rates of 40–45% and improved chemotherapy will play a role in the treatment and perhaps in the prevention of disseminated disease. Although it seems likely that chemotherapy combined with newer radiotherapeutic technique could improve treatment results in advanced pancreatic cancer, treatment‐related and limiting toxicity still must be defined. There are suggestions that more surgeons become involved in the combined modality approach, as both radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be more valuable in primary management. The unsatisfactory results of surgical treatment imply the need for adjuvant treatment, which must be tested in randomized multicenter trials. Future efforts will require an interdisciplinary approach to this

AbstractDermatomyositis (DM) has been linked to internal malignancy but this relationship is quite variable in respect to tumor type and time sequence. The occurrence of multiple cancers in an individual with DM is rare. Immunosuppressive agents, particularly methotrexate have been used increasingly in corticosteroid resistant cases or for their corticosteroid sparing effects. These agents have not been implicated in the development of malignancy in patients with DM. A patient with a uterine adenocarcinoma developed DM that despite tumor removal was not responsive to corticosteroids. She was successfully treated with methotrexate for 18 months. She has subsequently developed an adenocarcinoma of the breast. The relationship of malignancy and DM as well as the role of methotrexate in the development of the second primary will be discussed.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction of heat and chemotherapy in experimental whole body hyperthermia (WBH). A vascular technique of extracorporeal perfusion was employed to rapidly elevate body temperature in rabbits carrying the transplantable VX‐2 carcinoma. Hyperthermia (>41°C) was achieved in a mean time of 28 minutes. Tumor‐bearing rabbits receiving WBH alone exhibited poor mean survival (14 days) relative to untreated tumor‐bearing animals (32 days) and the group receiving IV Cis‐platinum alone (50 days) (NS, p<.05 respectively). WBH with Cis‐platinum was intermediate in terms of mean survival (30 days, NS) between the WBH alone and Cis‐platinum alone groups. In this experimental model we have determined WBH to be a detrimental form of cancer therapy. Its action appears to enhance tumor proliferation, resulting in rapid animal demise.
