AbstractThe pathogenesis of anemia of the Shay chloroleukemia (SCL) was studied in rats following SC, IP and IV inoculation of chloroma cells. Little difference in survival was noted regardless of the route of inoculation. A decrease in hematocrit occurred in all SCL rats during approximately the final 48 hours of the disease; however, the anemia was more severe in SC‐ and IP‐inoculated terminal rats than in SCL rats inoculated IV. A reduction in the numbers of normal cellular elements was noted in the femoral bone marrow of most terminal rats studied which was found to correlate inversely with the leukemic blast cell content of the marrow. No correlation was observed between the erythroblast content of the marrow and the degree of anemia. The number of erythroblasts varied from greatly reduced to normal in terminal SCL rats despite severe anemia. Moreover, the greatest reduction of both normal marrow cellularity and erythroblast numbers was observed in IV inoculated rats which consistently displayed the highest hematocrits in the terminal stage of the disease. Thus, the terminal anemia appears to be due primarily to excessive red cell loss. AbstractBacterial endotoxin was used as a granulopoietic stressor in the RLV ‐A infected mouse as a means of studying the marrow and spleen CFU‐C response to this agent. A control group of phenylhydrazine (PHZ)‐treated mice was also employed to induce a reduction in hematocrit levels equivalent to that observed in the early and mid‐stage of the disease course and was used to determine whether the cloning observed was a manifestation of RLV ‐A disease or could be attributed solely to the resulting anemia. Both RLV ‐A infected and PHZ marrow from mice maintained at a hematocrit of 40% exhibited similar but higher than normal clonogenic capacities, whereas RLV‐A (hematocrit 40%) spleen had an expanded number of CFU‐C's when compared to PHZ treated (hematocrit 40%) mice. Examination of spleens of endotoxin‐treated RLV‐A (hematocrit 30%) infected mice indicated a 6 to 7‐fold increase in splenic CFU‐C numbers compared to endotoxin‐treated normal mice. PHZ plus endotoxin‐treated normal animals (hematocrit 30%) had splenic CFU‐C values which were approximately half those of RLV‐A infected (hematocrit 30%) endotoxin‐treated animals. AbstractThe clinicopathologic features of 118 granular cell tumors (GCT) encountered at two affiliated hospitals were reviewed. A total of 110 patients were affected over this 32‐year period of study (71 men, 39 women), and in 5% GCT were multiple. Patients ranged in age from 16 to 58 years (average 32 years) and were symptomatic for an average duration of 11 months prior to diagnosis. There was a greater than expected frequency of GCT among black patients (29%). Although tongue was the single most common anatomic site involved, relatively more GCT (44%) occurred in skin or subcutaneous tissue. Less common locations were breast parenchyma (10 cases), rectal mucosa and anus (6), vulva (4), esophagus and larynx (2 cases each). The correct preoperative diagnosis of this protean tumor was made in only three patients. GCT were surgically treated with the average diameter of resected tumor being 1.2 cm (range 0.2–3.5 cm). Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia was noted in 11 tumors and in one vulvar GCT there was overlying in situ squamous cell carcinoma. Tumors were incompletely excised in 24 of 56 patients having adequate followup; only five of these 24 patients experienced a local recurrence of tumor. Malignant behavior was not observed. AbstractThe cases of 43 cancer patients and nine patients without cancer were reviewed to assess the coagulation mechanism in patients with cancer. Of the 43 patients with cancer, at least one factor known to be associated with coagulation disturbances was present in 26. Hematologic or coagulation studies disclosed one or more abnormalities in 34 of the patients. A subgroup of 17 patients had no clinical or laboratory evidence of ongoing variables that should interfere with coagulation or hemostasis. Of these, 11, or 65%, had one or more abnormal results from coagulation studies. Of the nine members of the control group (patients without cancer), no patient had a positive history for a clinical coagulation disorder except for one incidence of thrombophlebitis in the year preceding the study. During the study, at least one coagulation abnormality was disclosed by hematologic testing. The results support the concept that coagulation problems in cancer patients are attributable to debilitation, multiple organ involvement, and coagulation‐interfering variables rather than to a primary effect of the malignant tumo

AbstractThe effects of thymic factors on the growth of a chemically induced tumor have been studied, The thymic factors were obtained by a gentle isolation procedure which minimizes loss of material and biological activity. The administration of the thymic factors neither influenced the development or growth of the tumor nor the weight of the thymus or the spleen. A bigger thymus and a smaller spleen were observed in animals rejecting the tumor, whether or not they received the thymic factors.

AbstractA 30‐year‐old white male developed cutaneous patches of depigmentation which were treated with Trioxsalen ingested before daily sunbathing. A darkly pigmented lesion which appeared three weeks later on his back was widely excised and classified as a low‐grade malignancy. Although the treatment of vitiligo with plants containing photodynamically active compounds dates back as far as 1400 BC, the modern period of research began only in the 1930's leading to the development of oral psoralens, a coumarin derivative. In early tests, patients showed increased sunlight tolerance and repigmentation of vitiliginous areas. Although some patients have developed uveitis and vitiligo while being treated for melanoma, previous published reports deny any cutaneous malignancy arising during drug therapy of vitiligo. AbstractTwenty‐eight patients admitted with infravesical obstruction symptoms were studied. Fourteen of these patients were suffering from prostatic carcinoma defined as inoperable. The remaining 14 patients were diagnosed as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and transurethral resection (TUR) was performed to all of them. Specimens obtained by TUR were used to analyze tissue activities of total and tartarate labil acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase. Enzymatic levels in the tissue were estimated by using fluorimetric method (FU/mg). The estimated averages seemed to vary in favor of the malignant tissue, however this variation was not found to be statistically significant. Different inhibition levels were observed in benign and malignant tissue with the addition of L(+) tartarate. The average levels of the alkaline phosphatase were found to be lower than those of acid phosphatase, but the former showed no difference between the malignant and benign group

AbstractThis study describes a technique of hepatic isolated perfusion in dogs. The uptake of 14 C‐Iabeled 5 fluorouracil (5‐FU) by the normal canine liver was fourfold greater when isolated perfusion was used than when peripheral intravenous administration or hepatic artery infusion were applied.
