AbstractThirty‐seven axillary status of patients with breast carcinoma was studied with preoperative and peroperative palpation before mastectomy and total axillary dissection. Special attention was paid to the clinical supiciousness and size of axillary nodes. The preoperative axillary palpation gave false diagnosis of axillary content 27% of the time and peroperative, 19%. Of all 249 nodes studied, 54 were found to contain malignant growth in routine histological examination. Mean diameter of malignant nodes was 12.4 mm and of benign nodes, 6.3 mm. The most clinically suspect axillary lymph node gave correct diagnosis of axillary status in 72 % of the cases. The 2 most suspect lymph nodes together were positive in 89%. There was no case with histologically positive axilla where none of the 3 most suspect lymph nodes was malignant. AbstractThe dog‐to‐sheep renal xenograft model was utilized to isolate the antibodies that participate in xenograft hyperacute rejection. These sheep antibodies, which were isolated from the rejected dog kidney, agglutinated and killed only dog blood and kidney cells whereas the whole sheep serum reacted with both dog and rabbit cells. AbstractProgesterone receptor was measured in eight samples of renal cell carcinoma, nine samples of normal renal tissue, and one sample of melanoma tissue. AbstractOne patient with a large inoperable malignant hemangiopericytoma and three patients with local recurrence and/or metastases were treated with combination adriamycin, 50 mg/m2, and DTIC, 600–700 mg/m2, intravenously every 4 weeks. Two achieved palliation, one with measurable shrinkage of tumor, and the other with loss of incapacitating lower limb edema secondary to vascular and lymphatic obstruction. The third patient objectively had a less than partial response. The fourth patient did not respond to adriamycin and DTIC or to a subsequent trial of cis‐platinum, 60 mg/m2, intravenously every 3 weeks. However, radiotherapy produced an objective response at the site of the local recurrence and relief of painful bone metastases. Two patients died of progressive disease; the third patient has stable disease and is continuing chemotherapy; and the fourth patient died, probably from adriamycin‐induced cardiac failure in the presence of rapidly advancing intraabdominal metastases. The combination of adriamycin and DTIC is active in malignant hemangiopericytoma, and palliation of advanced disease can be achieved. AbstractTo determine whether serum β2‐microglobulin values could be useful as a tumor marker in patients with soft tissue sarcomas, 31 preoperative sera stored in our serum bank were assayed by radioimmunoassay for β2‐microglobulin levels. Sera were selected from patients known to have large bulky tumors, but no evidence of other major systemic disorders. Thirty‐one sera of sex and age matched controls were assayed for compar ison. The laboratory range for normal serum β2‐microglobulin values was 1.1‐2.4 mg/1. Our control patients had values ranging from 0.7‐1.7 mg/1. Values in tumor patients ranged from 0.7‐2.5 mg/1. No markedly elevated values were observed in any single patient. Four age groups, 20‐29, 30‐39, 40‐49, and 50‐59 years, revealed no significant differences. This observation differs from previously reported data. Serum β2‐microglobu lin appears to have no value as a tumor marker in patients with soft tissue sarcomas. AbstractDuring 1980, in strict accordance with indication schedules outlined for breast, skin, oral cavity, lymph node, and soft tissue lesions, 2,499 patients were selected and operated on in the outpatient department of our institution. The main purpose was early detection of unexpected cancer without hospitalization. Of 1,266 breast operations, 99 (7.8%) unexpected carcinomas and 67 (5.3%) borderline or precancerous lesions were detected, with a higher rate of T1 and N—cases than were found in hospitalized breast carcinoma patients: Tl, 61% vs 38%; N—, 68% vs 54%. The specimens of 1,048 skin and oral cavity lesions revealed 261 (24.9%) squamous or basal cell carcinomas, and most of them were cured by the outpatient surgery itself. Removal of 149 suspicious nevi revealed 20 (13.4%) unexpected malignant melanomas; 185 operations on lymph node and soft tissues detected 44 lymphomas (31 unexpected), 36 metastatic lymph nodes (five unexpected), and six sarcomas (five unexpected). AbstractLiver tumors, both primary and secondary, receive their main blood supply from the hepatic artery. Hepatic artery ligation (HAL) causes a reduction in tumor growth and tumor necrosis. In this experiment, three different experimental tumors were used to study the effect of hepatic artery ligation at different intervals after the occlusion of the arterial blood supply. Hepatic artery ligation causes a reduction in liver tumor growth for all three tumors but with some variation according to age and type of tumor.
