AbstractPrimary isografts of a highly immunogenic methylcholanthrene tumor were injected into pregnant C57/BL mice. Tumor growth was studied and compared to isografts injected into virgin C57/BL mice preimmunized with fetal antigens. Significant in vivo enhancement of MCA tumor growth was noted in both intra‐ and interstrain pregnant mice compared with virgin controls. In addition, active preimmunization of virgin mice with hybrid fetal liver did not result in rejection of primary tumor isografts, suggesting that fetal antigens did not contribute to the immunogenicity of this MCA tumo

AbstractThe incidence of spontaneous tumors was studied in a group of 136 female mice and in another group of 138 females after a sublethal dose of total body irradiation. Of the nonirradiated mice 10.2% developed mammary tumors, and 8% developed lung tumors. Of the irradiated mice 19.5% developed mammary tumors, 21.7% ovary tumors, 24.5% lung tumors, and 7.9% tumors in other organs.A vaccine was prepared for only mammary and ovary tumors through an original technique. The results showed a significantly lower incidence of tumors in another two groups of mice that were immunized: in 80 nonirradiated vaccinated female mice, mammary tumors decreased from 10.2% to 2.5%, and in 78 irradiated and vaccinated female mice, mammary tumors decreased from 19.5% to 8.9% and ovary tumors from 21.7% to 3.8%. Lung tumors also decreased in the latter group, suggesting a common factor protecting the immunized mice.

AbstractThis study was undertaken to find out if there are any factors of prognostic significance that can help the surgeon in the management of osteogenic sarcoma. One hundred and thirty‐nine cases of osteogenic sarcoma were treated during a 30‐year period and their survival figures have been analysed with respect to age, sex, extent of disease, previous treatment, and value of lymphadenectomy. We found that patients in whom the lymph nodes were preserved had a better survival as compared to patients in whom the lymph nodes were removed en bloc with the primary tumour.This further supports our contention that the regional lymph nodes have an important role to play in the immune response against osteosarcoma. The experimental work of the cytotoxic action of regional lymph node cells against osteosarcoma cell lines has been studied in our laboratory. AbstractA series of 156 patients with gastric cancer during a 15‐year period were reviewed retrospectively to determine the effectiveness of combined surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. The patients were divided into a 9‐year prechemotherapy period and a 6‐year chemotherapy period. Review of the data revealed an increase in the incidence of distant disease. The utilization of surgery as the only mode of treatment declined. Combination surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy utilization increased. Comparison of survival for surgery vs. adjuvant chemotherapy, expressed as percentage of survivors for each year, revealed an increase at 1 and 2 years with no difference at 3 years for all stages. A similar comparison for patients with regional spread showed an increase at 1,2, and 3 years with no difference thereafter. The 5‐year survival was 5% for both groups. AbstractTwenty cases of advanced (Stage III) cancer of the cervix were treated with intratumour injection of 40% urea solution and local application of 50% urea ointment. Sixty percent of these patients had beneficial effect and in 25% of the patients there was minimal response. Patients with multiple secondaries in liver had very good symptomatic relief with oral urea. Urea therapy is a simple, cheap, and safe method of treating advanced stages of cancer, where very little can be done by the accepted lines of treatment such as surgery or radiotherapy. This line of treatment can be practiced even in a consulting room or primary health center.

AbstractA review of our experience using BCG immunotherapy as a postsurgical adjunct in the treatment of melanoma shows that the incidence of systemic metastases appears to have been reduced. However, central nervous system (CNS) metastases continue to develop in these patients and represent the single most frequent cause of death. Serial studies of immune competence in these patients reveal that those with CNS metastases usually retain normal immune responses, whereas those with metastases at other sites exhibit progressive immunosuppression with advancing disease.

AbstractRemoval of recirculating lymphocytes from the lymph of calves by extracorporeal thoracic duct filtration results in a state of immunounresponsiveness. Accompanying this is histological evidence of lymphocyte depletion from the lymph organs and structures of the body. Lymph nodes, spleen, hemolymph nodes, Peyer's patches, and thymus appear depleted of the recirculating small lymphocyte. We find this closed model of lymphocyte depletion effective and free of severe problems with infections and physiological alterations as experienced in mechanical removal, extracorporeal irradiation, and open thoracic duct fistulas.

AbstractAll cancer cases diagnosed in Puerto Rico are analyzed and registered in the Central Cancer Registry. The incidence of oral cancer in Puerto Rico is fourth‐highest in the world. (In 1972 oral cancer accounted for 72% of all cancers in males in Puerto Rico.) AbstractThe blastogenic reactivity of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) and mesenteric lymph node lymphocytes (LNL) against normal allogeneic leukocytes and autochthonous colorectal carcinoma cells is evaluated in 36 patients, and correlated with the patients' Dukes classification. Mesenteric LNL react significantly better than PBL to allogeneic leukocytes in both Dukes B and C (p<0.05). There are too few patients in Dukes A and D to permit statistical evaluation, but the trend is the same. By contrast, LNL fail to react to autochthonous tumor cells in all classes, except in a few Dukes B patients. The proportion of PBL reactivity to autochthonous tumor cells seems to increase for Dukes C and D. It is possible that specific lymphocyte reactivity in colorectal carcinoma may be related to the antigenicity and immunogenicity of the tumor.
