AbstractIt is suggested that the designation of erythroplasia of Queyrat should be restricted to cases of Bowen's disease or intraepithelial carcinoma of the glans penis in order to exclude more clearly the benign erythroplasias of the penis. Therapeutic measures should be directed at cure but also the maintenance of sexual and urethral function and sensation when possible. Traditionally, both invasive carcinoma and carcinoma‐in‐situ have been treated by amputation, electrosurgical dessication, or radiation therapy, and more recently topical chemotherapy for the superficial lesions. A mold technique with accurate dosimetry is described for use in an extensive case of erythroplasia of Queyrat involving the glans, prepuce and two‐thirds of the shaft with a successful early result and preservation of function and sensation to

AbstractAn unusual mandibular tumor described by the eminent bone tumor specialist Dr. L. Lichenstein as a mesenchymoma is described in a seven year old African girl. Successful resection of the neoplasm and the eventual reconstruction of the defect six months later are described. Shortly the patient will have the splint removed and be fitted with a dental prosthesis for functional and aesthetic purposes.

AbstractFour different techniques of parathyroid gland reimplantation into muscle were studied in 38 dogs following total parathyroidectomy. The types of autotransplants were whole gland, minced glandular tissue, thin slices 0.3 mm or less, and thick slices 0.4 mm to 0.5 mm. The animals were followed for four months. AbstractDelayed hypersensitivity reaction of 58 consecutive cases of bronchogenic carcinoma was studied by skin tests. None of the patients with excellent skin reaction was found to have hematogenous metastasis. All patients with negative skin reaction had hematogenous metastasis and all but two such patients died within 2 months. Patients with localized tumors or lymph node metastases appear to maintain competent delayed hypersensitivity reaction and a move toward more aggressive approaches in treating the patients in this group is proposed. It is suggested that skin testing in bronchogenic carcinoma could provide useful information of the extent of the tumor and immunological status of the patients, and should, therefore, be included in routine work‐up

AbstractPreviously, we observed close relationship between impairment of reaction to delayed hypersensitivity skin test and extent of bronchogenic carcinoma patients. Recently 3 patients with suspected carcinoma of the lung with hematogenous metastases demonstrated excellent reaction to the skin tests contrary to our past experience. Further work up demonstrated that these patients had primary carcinoma other than the lung in origin. The cases are reported to emphasize again the importance of skin tests in bronchogenic carcinoma.

AbstractThis type of cancer is peculiar to this region as the people of all age groups are accustomed to warm their bodies by the use of Kangri Baskets. This is seen mostly among the “not well‐to‐do classes” who have no other means of fighting the extreme cold during the winter. The ulcers are the result of continuous constant contact of the hot pot, made of mud, enclosed in a basket made of willow. The author has studied quite a number of cases in all age groups during his stay in the valley, and has noticed that the precancerous condition of pigmentation and rough skin in the users of this “Kangri pot” has certain manifestations. In due course, by further irritation by heat, the ulcer breaks down with secondary infection and malignant transformation. The squamous type of carcinoma of the skin at the site of the constant heat application exists at times without involving the adjacent lymph glands. The prognosis of the disease is worse when the infiltration of cancer involves the lumph glands. It is also clearly brought out that this type of cancer is entirely due to the environmental causes, which could be prevented. The victims, in addition, are anemic due to worm infestations in their system (round and hookworms). The secondary infection of ulcer and glands is accentuated by the poor hygience which also increases the morbidity and mortality of these cases. The treatment of this condition has to be done first to combat the anemia due to worms by deworming the patients, combating the secondary infection by antibiotics, and, finally, by certain herbs, chemotherapeutic drugs, and radioactive isotopes. The surface application of radioactive isotopes in early ulcers is useful. Deep x‐ray therapy also has been tried. AbstractOver 5,000 histologically confirmed cases of cancer of the pancreas from the End Results Group of cancer registries have been examined for differences in behavior by epidemiologic and pathologic variables. Thirteen percent had a specific histologic diagnosis other than “adenocarcinoma,” “carcinoma,” or “cancer.” The 92 cases of islet cell carcinoma were unique, having a much younger age at diagnosis (two‐thirds instead of one‐third diagnosed under the age of 60), a locational preference for the body and/or tail (only 40% instead of 70% occurring in the head of the pancreas), and a very favorable survival experience (15 year relative survival of 14%). Of cancers of the exocrine pancreas, the 64 cases with papillary histology were most distinct, two‐thirds being found in women, 18% instead of 10% being localized, and having relatively favorable survival (30% one‐year survival, 5% three‐year survival). Patients whose tumors revealed squamous metaplasia occurred in general at older ages and had unusually poor survival. Analysis by anatomic location showed an increasing percentage of carcinomas occurring in the head of the pancreas with increasing age. Analysis of “adenocarcinomas” by histologic grade indicated that grade may carry some prognostic information not explained by difference in stage. AbstractThe incidence of hyperfibrinogenemia was studied in 1961 patients with different malignancies. Hyperfibrinogenemia was found to be associated with rapidly growing tumors. On the one hand, carcinomas, sarcomas, and Hodgkin's disease presented hyperfibrinogenemia very frequently. On the other hand, chronic leukemias and lymphosarcomas seldom presented hyperfibrinogenemia. This study confirms that hyperfibrinogenemia and hypercoagulability might play a role in the growth of tumors and indicates the tumors more suitable for future prospective studies.
