AbstractTwenty patients of primary urethral carcinoma in females are presented. Age group affected was between 40 and 60 years. Vague symptoms in early stage delayed the diagnosis in most patients. Surgery is the treatment of choice for meatal or anterior urethral lesions while combined Radiotherapy and surgery has been suggested as treatment for entire urethral lesions. In the present series 33% three years and 21% five years survivals were noted.

AbstractTo determine the auditory toxicity effects of long‐term cis‐dichlorodiammineplatinum II therapy, pure tone hearing thresholds were measured prior to therapy and repeated before each subsequent treatment. CDDP was given by a slow intravenous drip method at a low dose of 1 mg/kg body weight, with 37.5 gm mannitol, once a week for six treatments and every 3 weeks thereafter. From a group of 173 genitourinary cancer patients treated, 50 male patients were selected who received at least 12 months of CDDP with no active conductive ear pathology, and whose audiograms obtained at baseline, 6th weeks, 26th weeks, and 52nd weeks of treatment were all available for comparison. Pure tone threshold levels deteriorated across time particularly by the 52nd week and at the higher frequencies. Threshold differences across time were statistically significant and within a linear trend. Of the 50 cases, 30% showed suspect or no ototoxicity, 26% mild, 32% moderate, 2% marked, and 4% showed severe ototoxic changes. Of the two cases who developed severe ototoxicity, one showed complete recovery. There was partial recovery in 26% and no recovery in 54%. AbstractThere were 487 patients treated for malignant melanoma of the upper extremities at the Pack Medical Group in New York City between 1939 and 1967 inclusive, fourth in frequency (14.7%) of total malignant melanomas treated here, being exceeded by malignant melanoma of the trunk (34%), head and neck (23%), and the lower extremities (20%). A 10‐year survival rate of 342 determinate patients was 63%. Fourteen percent of the patients who died of melanoma died between the fifth and tenth years, indicating the need to report survival at the 10‐year span. Survival was equal for the sexes (61% male and 64% female). The majority of the patients had infiltrating melanomas (Clark's Level 4 and 5) with a survival rate of 62%. Ten patients with superficial spreading melanomas (Clark's Level 2 and 3) and juvenile melanomas enjoyed a 100% 10‐year survival. The worst prognosis was for six patients with amelanotic melanoma in that only two of ten survived ten years or longer. The question of elective axillary dissection remains elusive. In 106 patients classified as clinical Stage I, elective axillary dissection was performed in 55 instances, and 26 patients had microscopic evidence of metastases. Their 10‐year survival rate was 65%, slightly higher than 16 patients in whom no elective axillary dissection was performed, among whom six later developed evidence of metastases, underwent therapeutic node dissections, and had a 10‐year survival of 56%. AbstractA case of leiomyosarcoma of the adrenal gland is reported. This is a rare neoplasm at this location and actually may arise from the venous wall of the gland. Angiographically, this lesion is demonstrated as a vascular mass with early draining of the vein.

AbstractThis study comprises 27 cases of male breast cancer treated at the University Hospital from 1966 through 1978. Its incidence was 0.53% of all cancer in males and 3.2% of all mammary cancers. Mean age was 52 years old. Lump in the breast was the commonest presenting feature in all patients followed by skin ulceration in 44.4% of cases. The average duration of symptoms was 16 months. Twenty‐five patients had infiltrating duct carcinoma and two had papillary carcinoma. Two cases were in stage I, 10 in stage II, 11 in stage III, and 4 in stage IV. Of the 12 patients in stages I and II who underwent radical mastectomy, the axillary lymph nodes were pathologically negative in stage I and positive in stage II. The nodes were clinically involved in stages III and IV. Simple mastectomy followed by radiotherapy were used in stage III cancer and all patients in stage IV cancer had only biopsy and palliative chemotherapy. Bilateral orchidectomy followed by estrogen gave only marginal benefit in terms of survival and objective regression. Only four patients, two each in stages I and II, are alive and well for more than five years. These include two cases of papillary carcinoma. AbstractThe red blood cell (RBC) uptake of rubidium‐86 (Rb‐86), a sensitive in vitro test of RBC membrane transport, was measured in 22 controls, 8 patients with benign breast lesions, and 30 stage I/II, 13 stage III/IV untreated breast cancers. Total Rb‐86 transport was measured. Following ouabain block, passive transport was determined, allowing calculation of active Rb‐86 uptake by difference.There was a significant decrease in total and passive uptake by RBCs from patients with breast cancer when compared to controls and those with benign lesions (total uptake 58.6 ± 6.1% versus 63.6 ± 3.9%, P<0.01; passive uptake 38.7 ± 6.8% versus 42.7 ± 4.6%, P<0.02). The Rb‐86 uptake returned towards normal in successfully treated stages‐II‐to‐IV patients. There were no correlations with the patient's age, hematocrit, or incubation hematocrit with RBC Rb‐86 uptakes. Results from incubation in Krebs‐Ringer solution were not consistent with a plasma blocking factor. The RBC potassium content was slightly increased in the cancer patients. This, along with decreased passive transport, eliminates the nonspecific malfunction of the Na‐K‐pump as an explanation, and suggests that the decreased uptake is

AbstractOut Of 840 Cases Of Breast Carcinoma Seen Over A Period Of Ten Years, 18 Were Found To Be Associated With Pregnancy And Lactation. According To The Mode Of Onset And Presentation Of The Disease, These Patients Were Divided Into Four Groups. The Average Age Of These Patients Was 31.9 Years Old. Thirteen Out Of 18 Patients Presented In A Very Advanced Stage Of The Disease. In A Short Period, Involvement Of Liver Was Noticed In 8, Brain In 3, And Bones And Lung In 2 Each. The Disease Was Bilaterally Simultaneous In Two Patients. The Acceleration Of Growth Was Noticed During Second And Third Trimesters Of Pregnancy As Well As During Lactation. The Termination Of Pregnancy In Three Patients Did Not Alter The Clinical Course Of The Disease.

AbstractFc receptors from human tumors were isolated by sucrose gradient fractionation and affinity chromatography techniques. The isolated Fc receptors showed specificity for IgG(Fc) in the closed chamber hemadsorption technique and also in the inhibition experiments using radiolabeled Fc receptors. The results indicate that Fc receptors isolated from tumor tissue are similar to Fc receptors isolated from normal human spleen, dog macrophages, and peripheral white blood cells (WBCs). However, the Fc receptors isolated from macrophages are more potent inhibitors when compared with tumor, spleen, and peripheral WBC Fc receptors. Also, Fc receptors isolated from the various sources are independent of species specificity.

AbstractTwenty‐four patients with malignant fibrous histiocytoma are being analyzed: 54.2% occurred in the sixth, seventh, and eighth decades of life; 45.8% were located in the extremities. This is a soft tissue sarcoma noted for its pleomorphic histologic appearance. It is postulated that the origin cell is a histiocyte. The local recurrence or metastatic potential of this tumor is difficult to predict from its histological features. Local recurrence after complete excision is frequent. Also, there is a high incidence of distant metastases. Wide local excision with a wide margin around the tumor is the most important treatment modality.
