AbstractTwo hundred sixty‐seven laparotomized patients with pancreatic cancer during the period 1947 to 1980 were retrospectively analyzed. In 199 histologically confirmed cases of pancreatic carcinoma the tumor was only local with no invasion to neighboring tissues or distant metastases in 15% of the cases at the primary laparotomy and diagnosis stages, and the survival rates after 1, 3, and 5 years were 22%, 3% and 1%, respectively. The prognosis was a little better if a patient was over 70 years old, duration of symptoms was more than one year, the reason for laparotomy was cholecystopathy, the tumor was stage I, the treatment was a combination therapy of pancreatic resection and postoperative irradiation (with a depth dose of ≥ 4,000 rad). We concluded that, excluding the extremely rare cases of pancreatic carcinoma which are cured with pancreatic resection, the survival of patients after primary operation is correlated nearly in the same way with the given treatment and the stage of the disease. AbstractFibrin Seal (FS) (a natural adhesive material composed of fibrinogen, cold insoluble globulin, factor XIII, platelet growth factor, antiplasmin thrombin, and calcium chloride) was utilized in the construction of vascular anastomosis of the femoral artery of mongrel dogs. AbstractHyperacute rejection of xenografts is thought to be triggered by humoral antibodies. It is known that natural antibodies against dog blood cells have been identified in sheep serum. Dog kidney antigen immunoadsorbent columns were placed in the extracorporeal lymph circuit of two sheep. In vivo studies have shown that these immunoadsorbent columns were effective in depleting the thoracic duct lymph of all antibodies with specificity for the dog kidney antigen. However, these columns were not effective in depleting the thoracic duct lymphocytes bearing surface receptors for the dog kidney antigen. When in vitro studies were carried out, the immunoadsorbent columns were effective in the depletion of both lymphocytes and antibody for the dog kidney antigen. Thus, since a humoral antibody response is thought to be responsible for the hyperacute rejection seen in xenografts, it is possible that these columns might be effective in prolonging xenograft survival.

AbstractThe clinicopathologic features of a case of cardiac tamponade as the initial presentation of extracardiac malignancy is reported and compared with those of previously reported cases. The lung was the site of the primary tumor in 58% of the cases. Irrespective of the sites of the primary tumor, mediastinal involvement or intrapulmonary metastases or both were documented in 88% of the cases. Examinations of the pericardial fluid and pericardiectomy specimen were negative in a considerable number of cases. Therefore, careful examination of the mediastinum and the accessible lung tissue at the time of pericardiectomy may reveal the malignant nature of the disease which may otherwise remain undiagnosed.

AbstractFour cases of prostatic carcinoma with metastasis to brain are described. Two of those cases are diagnosed antemortem. Our experience from postmortem case studies and review of the literature point to the fact that metastasis to brain from a prostatic cancer remains a rare occurrence.

AbstractBreast cancer is known to metastasize to all organs of the human body, and its manifestations are protean. It is almost impossible to predict which organ system will be invaded. Since 1950, there are seven autopsy series of patients with breast carcinoma published in the English literature.
