AbstractA case report is made of a 91 year old veteran who presented with a small bowel obstruction at the ileocecal valve secondary to an adenoacanthoma at the base of the appendix. AbstractThe survival data of 186 patients with renal cell carcinoma are discussed in respect to the different forms of treatment and other prognostic criteria, such as clinicopathological staging of the disease, histological grading, and cell type of the tumor. Patients with localized renal tumors (stage I) have a better prognosis than those with lesions extending into the perinephric fat, perinephric lymph nodes, or renal vein. Simple nephrectomy in isolated renal tumors (stage I) has provided a 55.1% 5 year survival and a 35.1% 10 year survival. In the more extensive stage (II and III), the therapeutic effect of nephrectomy is less apparent. The prognosis in stages II and III is almost similar. In the disseminated form of the disease, the prognosis has been poor and of all the past forms of treatment which have been previously employed, nephrectomy offered the best survival rate.For different forms of the disease, nephrectomy in combination with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy, may enhance the rejection effect of the host toward the tumor. However, this combination of therapy remains to be further clinically evaluated.

AbstractA reticulum cell sarconia which metastasizes preferentially to the spleens of inbred C3H mice has been studied. Placement of tumor‐bearing animals in parabiosis with normal animals was followed by the development of gross metastases limited to the spleen in 100% of the normal animals. The pattern of metastases observed when a tumor‐bearing animal was placed in parabiosis with a splenectomized animal is described. The splenotrophic tendencies of this tumor and its ability to metastasize selectively across a parabiotic union provide a model for investigation of the role of immunity and humoral factors in tumor metasta

AbstractReports in the early 1960's suggested the possible relationship between the humoral agents producing hypercalcemia in metastatic malignancy and the appearance of osseous metastases. Hartmann and Sherlock indicated that the use of corticosteroids possibly might alter the ease with which metastases to the gastrointestinal mucosa occur in breast carcinoma. The present study was an attempt to verify the previous observations of Pentimalli (1960) that hypercalcemia could produce bony metastases in rats.Using saline controls, ergosterol, methylprcdnisolone, and parathyroid hormone, no bony metastases could be demonstrated in rats implanted with Walker 256 sarcoma. It appears that these osteolytic substances at least within this model do not facilitate the appearance of metastases to bone.

AbstractPreservation of the intercostobrachial nerves during radical mastectomy for cancer of the breast was found to be rewarding. Of 46 mastectomies, 13 so treated were free of throbbing and paraesthesia sensations, while the other 33 had mild to severe complaint. The operative technique is described.

AbstractThe urine and plasma of 16 patients with carcinoma of the bladder, and 27 normal individudls were studied for the presence of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). An attempt was made to determine whether urine CEA‐like antigens are filtered by the kidney or shed directly by the bladder tumor itself. There were elevated levels of CEA in the plasma of patients with bladder tumors. The urine of patients with bladder carcinoma had significantly higher levels of CEA‐like antigen than the urine of normal individuals. These same bladder tumor patients did not have a positive correlation between their plasma CEA and the urine CEA‐like antigen levels. AbstractAn attempt to detect metastatic cancer by the specific localization of radiolabeled antibody is reported. The patient had far advanced carcinoma of the colon and a high level of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in serum. She was given whole unabsorbed rabbit antiserum to CEA intravenously, to determine whether CEA can be removed from the circulation. A transient partial depression of the CEA level in serum was obtained, followed by a rebound. Absorbed and purified antibody radiolabeled with131I was injected intravenously 19 days later. Total body scans showed no evidence of the localization of the radiolabel in cancer tissue. After another 5 days, injection of the same radiolabeled antibody solution directly into the hepatic artery was attempted. Again, no evidence of localization in liver metastases was obtained. All three infusions of antibody to CEA caused reactions that were ameliorated by Benadryl. Future trials may have better Success if monospecific anti‐CEA is used and patients are chosen who have CEA‐producing tumors, but whose serum CEA levels are low or negat

AbstractSCH 13521 (4′‐nitro‐3′‐trifluoromethylisobutyranilide) given daily for 3 days to juvenile, adrenalectomized male rats did not affect the thymus weight even in toxic doses, nor did it enhance the thymolytic effect of simultaneously injected cortisone acetate (CA). However, the thymolytic effect of CA was doubled when injected simultaneously with SCH 13521 in adrenalectomized rats pretreated for 18 days with SCH 13521. In such rats also the CA‐induced liver weight increase was enhanced. The weights of the ventral prostate and the seminal vesicles were decreased by SCH 13521, which also decreased the testes weight, indicating an antigonadotropic effect
