AbstractA 56‐year‐old nullipara presented with a mass in the right axilla. Pathologically, two enlarged lymph nodes were found to contain metastatic adenocarcinoma consistent with a primary from the breast. Clinically, no breast mass was palpable, and xeromammography showed diffuse ductal hyperplasia and a small focus suggestive of malignancy. Modified radical mastectomy was done, and no tumor was found pathologically in the excised breast. The patient received local radiotherapy and is alive and well one year postoperatively. AbstractA case of papillary renal cell carcinoma with clinical and angiographic features of an abscess is reported. Papillary renal carcinomas constitute 14% of renal adenocarcinomas. These tumors have slower growth rate and better prognosis.

AbstractA retrospective analysis of extensive surgery with resection of retroperitoneal sarcoma and total or partial resection of adjacent organs in 15 patients is presented. Dominating symptoms were a palpable mass (80%). The tumor was felt in all patients. In 9 of 10 patients, ultrasonography showed a solid tumor with retroperitoneal location. In 14 patients (93%) the tumor was removed, in 11 of them adjacent organs also. Five of the patients were subjected to more than one operation because of tumor recurrence. Two patients died postoperatively. Six patients are alive without tumor recurrence; and three, with recurrence 18 to 62 months after the first operation. Four patients died 5–24 months after primary operation. In seven patients (50%), the tumor recurred locally. Surgery for recurrent tumor was beneficial.Complete surgical removal provides the most effective therapeutic approach. AbstractThe ability of a lung cancer‐associated antigen (LCAA) to provoke specific cutaneous delayed‐hypersensitivity reactions has been studied on a group of 59 lung cancer patients. Biological activity of LCAA, monitored by skin testing, was demonstrated in 32% (17 of 53) of lung cancer patients, in 48.0% with limited disease, and in 17.2% with extensive disease.All the responders were in the group of normal reactors to standard recall antigens, if three antigens were used (PPDSK‐SD, candida). No correlation was found between biological activity of LCAA and level of immunocompetence evaluated by lymphocyte‐blastic transformation with PHA and count of rosette E‐forming cells.These studies on the capacity to evoke specific DTH reactions in lung‐cancer patients will be extended to the use of assays in vitro in the perspective of a more significant evaluation of immunocompet

AbstractPeritoneal macrophages from both congenitally athymic (“nude”) mice and heterozygous littermates were activated by pyran copolymer or by Corynebacterium parvum vaccine. C parvum did not produce an increase in the number of peritoneal macrophages in nude mice, although it did produce a typical splenomegaly. Pyran produced an even greater influx of macrophages in the peritoneum of nude mice, when compared to normal mice, but did not produce splenomegaly in nude mice. Pyran‐ and C parvum‐induced splenomegaly were accompanied by an increase in the apparent T‐cell population of germinal centers. These experiments indicate that: 1) Macrophage activation, perse, by either C parvum or pyran, is a thymus‐independent event; 2) Macrophage mobilization, as determined by organomegaly or PEC number, does not have an obligatory requirement for T‐cells (depending on the agent used); 3) Macrophage activation may not always correlate with mobilization; and 4) Mechanisms for attracting and sequestering macrophages in the peritoneum may be different from those

AbstractWe report a 59‐year‐old woman with disease manifestations diagnosed as mycosis fungoides (MF), as well as findings of sarcoidosis. The concurrence of these two disorders, both of which may be associated with basic immunopathogenic factors, has been reported. Histologically, the cutaneous findings of both non‐caseating granulomas and an infiltrate compatible with MF in the same site leads to a discussion of granulomatous MF. AbstractSubcutaneously implanted tumors in Wistar and Lister rats were used as a model for the study of metastatic tumor blood flow and how it is affected by vasoactive drugs. Blood flow measurements were obtained using the labelled microsphere method and the reference organ technique. Microspheres (15‐μm) labelled with either99Tcmor51Cr isotopes were injected intracardially and a reference sample was drawn simultaneously at constant speed. This was performed before and after the infusion of vasoactive drugs, and (as control), saline infusion. The drugs tested (adrenaline, noradrenaline, glucagon, histamine, and vasopressin) showed profound effects on central hemodynamic parameters and on muscle and skin blood flow. The relative tumor blood flow, measured as the ratio between tumor and skin or tumor and muscle blood flow, was calculated. The results show that no enhancement of the relative tumor blood flow could be registered. In fact, a decrease in the tumor‐to‐muscle‐blood‐flow ratio was noted when noradrenaline was infused, and in the tumor‐to‐skin ratio when adrenaline was infused. AbstractXenoantiserum, alloantiserum, and autoantiserum prepared against human melanoma cells from cell lines maintained in tissue culture were evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence (ind IF) for their content of antibodies reactive with melanoma cell membrane tumor‐associated antigens (TAA). Following absorptions which removed all detectable anti‐human species, anti‐RBC, and anti‐HLA antigen activity, the antisera were tested against a panel of human cell lines. Three apparently distinct melanoma‐associated cell membrane antigens were detected. The first of these was present on all human cells maintained in tissue culture including cells of both malignant and nonmalignant origin. The second antigen was expressed on all cells of malignant origin and also by fetal fibroblasts. The third antigen was detectable only on melanoma cells and was expressed by a majority of the melanomas tested.
