AbstractLung cancer is the leading cause of death from malignancy in men; and prediction indicates that in women it will soon surpass breast carcinoma in incidence and mortality. Four unusual modes of presentation of lung cancer are described, namely: ascites, gynecomastia, rectal bleeding, and sudden death. An illustrative case for each characteristic, along with a brief literature review, is reported.

AbstractThe relationship between prior cholecystectomy and right‐sided colon cancer was evaluated in a case‐control study. The study population comprised 267 women with right‐sided colon cancer (cases) and 268 women with left‐sided colon cancer (controls). All patients were white females, aged between 40 and 69 years, and registered at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute between 1970 and 1982. Thirty cases (11.2%) and 21 controls (7.8%) had documented prior cholecystectomy (odds ratio 1.49, 95% confidence limits 0.83, 2.67). The temporal relationship between cholecystectomy and colon cancer and the presence of diabetes were also evaluated. AbstractMassive hematemesis followed by 48 hours the onset of obstructive jaundice in a previously asymptomatic 38‐year‐old male patient. Splenomegaly was the only abnormal physical finding. Esophagoscopy visualized bleeding varices. The liver scan was normal. Dilated intra‐ and extrahepatic bile ducts and a possible retroperitoneal mass were demonstrated by ultrasonography. AbstractThe association between malignant tranformation and the loss of ABO(H) blood group antigens was documented by several authors. Most of the work was done on paraffin sections, though a small portion was performed on fresh frozen tissues. We suggest that the specific red cell adherance (SRCA) test can be applied to tissues cultivated in tissue culture for determination of malignant transformation. This study supports this assumption.

AbstractThe association of a malignant melanoma appearing as an additional primary tumor in the swollen arm adjacent to a mastectomy for breast cancer is reported. A review of the literature revealed only one similar patient previously reported. In both patients, the melanoma and its metastasis were restricted to the lymphedematous arm, appeared 10 years post‐mastectomy, and responded to therapy. AbstractFrom January 1967 through November 1983, 66 patients with a previously established diagnosis of malignancy were treated for pericardial effusion by the creation of a pericardial window. The majority of the patients had malignancies of the breast or lung, or lymphoma. There were no deaths or major complications attributable to the operative procedures.The presence of malignant pericardial effusion is usually evidence of far‐advanced disease and, therefore, the prognosis is poor. Seventeen patients (26%) were alive 1 or more years postoperatively and 33 patients (50%) died within 3 months of operation. AbstractTwo‐thousand, five‐hundred and twenty‐four bacterial isolates were tested against 11 new beta‐lactam antibiotics in a prospective study conducted in a cancer center.E. coli, P. aeruginosa, andK. pneumoniaewere the most common gram‐negative organisms isolated, whileS. aureusandEntero‐cocccuswere the most common organisms among the gram‐positive. The new cephalosporins were more active than the semisynthetic penicillins againstE. coli, P. aeruginosa, andK. pneumoniae(p<0.001). Mezlocillin had better activity than the other semisynthetic penicillins against most of the gram‐negative organisms as well as the enterococci. AbstractThree different acrylic resin intraoral stents used for radiotherapy are described. They serve multiple functions in the treatment of tumors of the oral cavity. AbstractEvidence is presented compatible with the hypothesis that the inevitable tissue injury to the breast engendered by mastectomy or primary radiotherapy may in itself be a factor facilitating recurrence through a variety of local, regional, and systemic tumor‐promoting mechanisms.
