AbstractAfter a study of the 176 cases (Everson and Cole) of spontaneous regression of cancer and recent progress in immunology, the author is convinced stimulation of the immune process is the most important factor in S.R. of cancer. Stimulating factors are numerous including bacterial products, enzymes, infections, hormones, trauma, etc. Of the 176 cases reported by Everson and Cole, 71 (40%) were associated with some type of operative trauma.Since the effective anticancer agent interferon is an important protective agent (especially antiviral) in the human body, this product could readily play an important role. Immunoglobulins appear to be possible factors. The blocking and unblocking agents of the Hellströms and associates support this supposition. Elimination of carcinogens appears important, considering the remarkable disappearance of cancer of the bladder in 12 of 13 patients having diversion of the urine from the bladder to the colon by transplantation of the ureters from the bladder to the colon.Innumerable antigens unknown to us at the present time could act as stimulants to our immune system, and thus cause regression of cancer. Hormonal factors must obviously be considered, but the author is doubtful that they exert an important role

AbstractThe occurrence of bilateral breast cancers in three members of one family is reported. In two members, evidence of a distinct primary lesion in each breast was verified. AbstractThe undescended testis carries an increased risk of cancer; however, the exact individual risk of a cryptorchist during his life to develop cancer is unknown. The risk of developing cancer can be calculated from three important figures: (a) the number of cryptorchists in the population; (b) the number of malignant testicular tumors found in undescended testicles; and (c) the number of testicular tumors per annum. In the literature, a 48 times increased chance to develop testicular cancer is accepted; it is a high risk which is contrary to the fact that a malignant cryptorchid testis is a very rare disease. Based on the estimated risk for the cryptorchist in the Netherlands to develop testicular cancer, this article criticizes the value of the figures that are generally used to calculate the individual risk; it is concluded that even today the exact risk is unknown. In giving advice concerning the management of undescended testis, one must appreciate not only the supposed cancer risk, but also take into consideration morbidity and mortality after prophylactic orchidectomy and improved cure rates after electively treated testicular tumors.

AbstractA comparative study of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and β2‐microglobulin in serum was made by radioimmunoassay in 121 patients with gastric disease. There was no statistical difference in serum CEA and β2‐microglobulin in patients with benign gastric disease, early gastric carcinoma, and advanced gastric carcinoma. However, CEA levels in patients with advanced gastric carcinoma were higher than those in benign gastric disease and in early gastric carcinoma but β2‐microglobulin did not show any differences. Furthermore, after total removal of the tumor, the elevated CEA levels decreased but β2‐microglobulin remained unchanged. We concluded that CEA appeared to predict tumor behavior more accurately in patients with gastric carcinoma than β2

AbstractFifty‐one previously untreated women with FIGO Stages III and IV ovarian adenocarcinoma underwent sequential monthly skin testing utilizing Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanian, Varidase, mumps, monilia, and a purified protein derivative Tuberculin (PPD) prior to each course of systemic chemotherapy (with or without Corynebacterium parvum). The purpose of the study was to evaluate the patients' ability to demonstrate a delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction to these sensitizing antigens and response to therapy. There was no statistically significant correlation with response to therapy and: 1) Positive pretherapy skin test reactions vs anergy to pretherapy skin tests. 2) Negative pretherapy and positive post‐therapy skin tests. 3) Anergy pre‐ and post‐therapy vs positive skin tests pre‐ or post‐therapy. 4) Age of the patient vs skin test reactivity. 5) Skin test reactivity to any one of the five antigens tested. 6) Skin test reactivity in response to therapy in those women also receiving Corynebacterium parvum. AbstractPretreatment vaginal smears of 251 patients with carcinoma of the cervix were counted for the percentage of histiocyte count in relation to benign squamous epithelial cells. No correlation was found between the percentage of histiocyte count and the age of the patient, clinical stage, cell type of squamous cell carcinoma, and clinical radiation response. Also a high histiocyte count is found to be unrelated to 5‐year survival, recurrence, metastasis, or death of these patients. AbstractThe effect of hepatic artery ligation and intraarterial embolization was investigated in rats with liver tumors. Only a temporary reduction in tumor growth was registered after both procedures as compared to controls. There was a somewhat more pronounced effect in the ligated animals then in the embolized ones. No clear cut differences in the extent of tumor necrosis could be found between the groups at the end of the experimental period.

AbstractEvaluation of cell mediated immunity against human melanoma target cells was performed in an in vivo model using human tumor xenografts growing in Balb/c athymic mice. Intraperitoneal inoculation of 1 × 107human melanoma cells produced peritoneal carcinomatosis which lead to death of the animals at 23.8 ± 2.6 days (N = 12). Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from normal donors were administered to tumor bearing mice, and survival times of 22.0±2.3 days were observed (N = 8). Peripheral blood lymphocytes from four of five normal donors which had been presensitized on monolayers of melanoma tissue culture cells in vitro failed to prolong host survival times. In contrast, PBL obtained from 15 of 20 melanoma patients were found to prolong survival of the tumor bearing nude mice. Of these 15 patients, 8 were undergoing specific active immunotherapy, while 7 had not been sensitized except by the disease process. The ability of PBL obtained from patients to prolong survival of tumor bearing animals did not appear to correlate with either the stage of the disease or the patient's clinical course. AbstractA splenic abscess was erroneously diagnosed in a 65‐year‐old patient. The diagnosis was established on clinical, radiological and ultrasonographic data. At laparotomy the spleen was markedly enlarged by tumoral tissue and contained a large cystic lesion. AbstractIt has been our policy to employ radical lung resection as a primary treatment whenever possible in locally far‐advanced lung cancer. In order to assess the therapeutic results, a total of 132 patients with locally far‐advanced lung cancer who had radical lung resection were reviewed. Postoperative mortality was 10%. A significant difference in survival was seen between those patients receiving no adjuvant therapy, radiation or single agent chemotherapy and those receiving cis‐platinum‐based polychemotherapy and/or immunotherapy (respective median survivals 14.25 and 25.68 months, P<0.05 Breslow test of failure rates).
