摘要:
A fault model was investigated for the Niigata Earthquake of June 16, 1964, and one consistent with the tsunami generation was obtained, using tide gauge records and inundation heights. Main parameters in the model are as follows: reverse fault with a dislocation of 6±1 m, strike of N22°E, and dip angle of 45° in the direction of N68°W, having a dimension of 55 km in length and 20 km in width. In this process it was found that the sea level ratio of the initial wave to the reflected one is sensitive to a dip angle. It is noticeable that the dimension is small and the dislocation is large, but the seismic moment is nearly equal in comparison with proposed models for this event. It is important to investigate each parameter of the fault model by applying it to the tsunami generation.

摘要:
On the basis of the so‐called “Fermat's Principle,” that tsunami waves proceed along such a path that the time required is minimum, the differential equation of the path of propagation was derived by applying Calculus of Variations, on the condition that the position of the wave source and that of the observing station are given. Solving the differential equation, for some cases where the distribution of water depth may be expressed by simple mathematical expressions, the path of propagation for each case was determined. The result of the application of the above method to the case of the “Tokachi‐oki Tsunami” in 1968 is introduced as an example in this paper.

摘要:
Intensity‐frequency relations are determined for tsunamis originated in the western coast of South America, along a length of about 5,000 km. Basic data for the period 1749–1974 are taken from recent catalogues. An empirical correlation of near‐source tsunami with earthquake magnitude for the region has been found. Statistics of Extreme Values are used in the investigation of tsunami recurrence. On the basis of present data, tsunami risk and return period are computed.

摘要:
Normalized energy density spectra were obtained from the tide‐gauge records of Concepción Bay (Chile) for March 10, 1957, May 22, 1960, and March 28, 1964 tsunamis. Distribution of energy peaks with frequency is explained by means of a rectangular bay. resonant model, and are identified as the first, second, and third harmonic modes of oscillation. For the 1960 tsunami, amplification factors computed from offshore sea surface elevation predictions agree reasonably with the values given by the model.

摘要:
A plan, or a design, of coastal structures to withstand tsunamis is considered in terms of economics. Nagao has been presenting this problem in his work since 1964, as a general problem of the design of the coastal structures. His work was reviewed by Iwagaki in 1971.

摘要:
Protection from potential tsunami effects is a design criterion for coastal nuclear power plants, especially on the U.S. Pacific Coast and in Puerto Rico. Because of the uncertainties involved in the probabilistic approach, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission uses a deterministic approach to conservatively estimate tsunami runup, drawdown, and the resulting effects at proposed nuclear power plant sites. However, because of the lack of good data to verify the tsunami models used, very conservative input parameters are used in tsunami analysis. The results may lead to overly conservative and expensive designs for the protection of nuclear power plants from the effects of tsunamis. We, therefore, call for tsunami research in specific areas in order to obtain more realistic estimates of tsunami effects in the future.
