摘要:
The term “mean sea level”; is discussed, and a number of factors known to cause changes in mean sea level are reviewed. These factors include changes in water density ("steric”; sea level, or “dynamic height") and atmospheric pressure. In the open ocean, these factors, in addition to tides, are the main sources of variation recognized by oceanographers. Other sources of variation affect mean sea level as deduced from coastal tide gauges. These include continental shelf waves, local wind effects (wind and wave “set‐up"), and perhaps radiation stress due to planetary waves. Problems in the measurement of mean sea level are discussed briefly.

Radar altimeter ranges from the GEOS‐3 spacecraft, collected over a 12‐month period between May, 1975, and May, 1976, were analyzed in an attempt to obtain regional ocean tide models for the M2constituent in the Sargasso Sea. Modeling of the ocean tide was attempted using Fourier solutions on profiles of altimetry data and also functional analysis techniques at crossover points. The methods use either discrete subsets of the data or the complete data set simultaneously. The resultant ocean tide models for the M2tide were compared against the Mofjeld (1975) empirical model for the area.

The dense coverage of short pulse mode GEOS‐3 altimeter data in the western North Atlantic provides a basis for studying oceanographic parameters of interest. Time variations in the sea surface heights were investigated in regional monthly models of the Sargasso Sea produced for six months between July, 1975, and April, 1976. The orbits used in reducing the altimeter data were computed using the GEM10 gravity field model and laser tracking data. Shortwave maxima and minima in the regional sea surface models were examined for correlations with surface and remote sensed infrared temperature data. On allowing for differences in the quantities being compared, a 90% correlation was obtained between the location of cyclonic eddies obtained from infrared imagery and sea surface height minima in the altimeter models.

摘要:
The Seasat Program was initiated as a proof‐of‐concept mission to evaluate the effectiveness of remotely sensed oceanographic phenomena from a satellite platform. From inception, this program has been user‐oriented. These users, within the academic, government, and commercial ocean communities, have served as the architects of the program and are continuing to be involved in the validation and application of the satellite‐derived data. While an early failure of the satellite deprived the user communities of a real‐time multiseasonal data set, the program did yield a rare and valuable archive of data now being analyzed and validated by a variety of users.
