Navigation by Loran‐C was evaluated in comparison with GPS's data during theJean Charcotcruise for the French‐Japanese cooperative project, Kaiko. Simple overlapping mean of Loran‐C positions for five minutes showed a good relative accuracy of about 50 meters. Loran‐C positions, however, showed systematic shift up to one kilometer due to propagation delay of Loran‐C wave through land area. The value of the shift was measured in the south off the Japanese Islands; it was found that the shift of Loran‐C position can be corrected within an accuracy of about 100 meters in most cases by use of the correction table prepared by the Hydrographic Department of Japan. In a special case as the Loran‐C wave propagates over a high mountain area or along a long coastal line, the recommended correction procedure for propagation delay should be improved to correct the local effects (∼200m).

摘要:
Daiiti‐Kasima Seamount is a flat‐topped and odd shaped seamount of 3,000–4,000 meters in relative height, rising in the axis of the Japan Trench, situated 220 kilometers east of Tokyo. Survey of this seamount had been conducted many times since 1934. Mogi and Nishizawa (1980) had provided a hypothesis that breakdown had taken place, and the seamount was divided into two parts by a large NNE‐SSW fault, while the western half of the seamount had subsided into the Japan Trench.

摘要:
In order to study a possible response of wide‐open bay, a numerical model of finite difference method was used. For convenience, Tanabe Bay facing the Pacific was taken as a specific example of case study. Response functions of water‐level and currents were obtained numerically at several points in the bay. Water‐level profiles at the crest and trough at the head of the bay show that a resonant mode has a node off the bay mouth on the continental shelf. Current profiles at ebb and flood in the bay were also shown. Such response should be considered for tsunami prediction and protection.

In 1978 and 1980, 12 lines of multi‐channel seismic reflection survey were carried out by the Hydrographic Department of Japan in the Nankai, Suruga, and Sagami Troughs bordering the northern subducting margin of the Philippine Sea plate. Multi‐channel seismic profiles on the Nankai Trough and the southern part of the Suruga Trough revealed the typical structure of subduction zone. The subducting oceanic crust is pursued for at least 30 km landward from the axis of Nankai Trough with the inclination of 3°‐5°. In the southener part of the Suruga Trough, the basement forming the Izu Peninsula is traced beneath the Trough and western slope for about 8 km with an inclination of 7°‐23°. On the lower landward slope of the trough distinctly imbricated sediment bodies with many thrust faults and folds, or accretional prism, were found. Probable accretional prism is formed by deformation of the trough‐fill sediments and makes the ridge and trough zone in the lower landward slope. On the other hand, the structure of the basement could not be identified in the northern part of Suruga Trough. However, some characteristics of the profiles suggest the subduction. In Sagami Trough the basement forming the Izu Peninsula is recognized beneath the Trough to the Misaki Knoll located on the landward slope of the Trough, with inclination of about 10°.

The International Symposium on Marine Positioning, INSMAP'86, organized by the Marine Geodesy Committee of the Marine Technology Society, was held 14 to 17 October 1986, under the sponsorship of seventeen organizations, at the U.S. Geological Survey National Center Auditorium in Reston, Virginia. INSMAP'86 was convened to focus attention on the special problems associated with positioning in the marine environment, to provide a timely forum for in‐depth discussions and exchange of ideas, to identify immediate and future applications and requirements, and to promote interdisciplinary and interagency collaboration between numerous investigators and users. The nine sessions and five workshops were attended by over 150 registered attendees representing North, Central, and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition, 13 exhibitors set up demonstrations in the corridors leading to the auditorium. Forty‐five papers, including invited addresses, were presented, and are available in a single volume of symposium proceedings.
