摘要:
In a tsunami source area, the statistical relation of the period and length of the wave to the source dimension is determined. The dependence obtained agrees with the piston model of tsunami wave generation.

摘要:
The art and science of navigation date back to antiquity. Beginning with procedures one step removed from black magic, navigation has progressed through the refined skill of the celestial navigator, the explosive development of electronic systems after the Second World War, to the artificial celestial system NAVSTAR GPS. Celestial navigation is certainly the most historic form, metaphysically speaking, and woe be to the mariner who proceeds to sea without a knowledge of it. This review will, however, concentrate on man‐made systems, which can operate automatically, that is, the position derived from man‐made signals propagating over finite distances can and usually are processed with man‐made systems. Usually one thinks of electromagnetic radio signals as exclusively fonning this set of signals, but underwater acoustic positioning systems are mathematically very similar and differ only in realization. Our review will highlight the state‐of‐the‐art in these positioning systems, commenting on the needs of users which spawned their development, and the major measures of the systems’ performance.

摘要:
Since the apparent sea slope along the Pacific coast between San Diego, California, and Neah Bay, Washington, was originally reported by Bowie in 1929, numerous points of view have been expressed in literature concerning this possibility. A recent interpretation proposes a complete agreement between geodetic and steric leveling. Another geodetic study shows a time variation of sea slope over a decade, suggesting a possible rise of San Pedro with respect to San Francisco (or San Francisco subsiding with respect to San Pedro) at an average rate of about 8 cm/yr. However, tidal records do not reveal large changes in the trend of mean sea level relative to land at the tide stations.

摘要:
Tsunami occurrence and invasive tsunami at a local area in the circum‐Pacific seismic zone were studied as a Poisson process. The tsunami height at Osaka, Japan, was related to tsunami magnitude. The exceedence frequency of invaded tsunami at Osaka showed a good fitness to the Poisson process. However, an adapted process should be introduced for exceedence frequency of tsunami occurrence in the western Pacific. The exceedence probability of invasive tsunami at Osaka was shown as a function of tsunami magnitude on a diagram with a parameter of the time period. The obtained result might be useful for the planning of coastal area, warning of invasive tsunami, and designing coastal structures as protection within the scope of tsunami economics.

摘要:
We evaluate a set of current measurements done in a section of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The flow is of estuarine character, the upper layer flow usually being directed seaward. The RMS value of steady current exceeds its mean value appreciably in the upper layer; it also exceeds the mean near the bottom. The near‐surface currents do change their direction on occasions and can run landward for over five consecutive days, especially in the southern part of the channel. The lower layer flow (landward) and the upper layer flow (seaward) varied in magnitude from 90 to 160 thousand m3/sec, and their fluctuations were in phase; their difference, the net flow, is of the order of 5% to 10% of these flows and could not be calculated with any confidence. Tidal motion is barotropic in the section, with some deformation in the vertical caused by bottom friction and internal stresses. The M2tide in the system Juan de Fuca‐Georgia Strait can be represented by a standing Kelvin wave influenced by friction. The K1tide can also be represented by a standing Kelvin wave if some leakage is allowed in the northern end of Georgia Strait. Topographic effects mask the Coriolis influence on the intensity of tidal currents.
