摘要:
Extract of nettles(Unica dioica) was evaluated for potential growth stimulating effects on wheat, tomato and barley. Approximately 10× dilution of nettle water gave the highest root fresh weight and adventitious root length in wheat in relation to more dilute or concentrated media. Plants of barley and tomato were grown in sand and a peat-sand mixture supplied with dilute nettle water or a nutrient solution with the same mineral composition. Use of nettle water resulted in about 20% higher shoot fresh weight and about 15% higher nitrogen levels in shoots compared with the nutrient solution treatment. Chlorophyll levels were also higher with the nettle water treatment. Soil respiration was approximately doubled in pots treated with nettle water compared with those receiving nutrient solution. Nettle water increased pH in the substrate by one to two units. No significant difference in growth effects was observed from use of fresh or dry nettles. Nettle water made from spring nettles usually gave higher shoot and root fresh weights than nettle water made from mid-summer and late-summer nettles. Compared with nutrient solution, nettle water seemed to have a growth-stimulating effect on plants. This effect probably depends on many factors, which are discussed.

摘要:
The decomposition of different carbonaceous compounds and their comparative effect on the immobilization and mineralization of applied fertilizer nitrogen in soil were investigated by an incubation experiment at 30°C. The data showed that all the glucose oxidised readily within 10 days of incubation and immobilized more than 85% of the applied nitrogen; thereafter, mineralization started again faster than with the other four carbonaceous compounds. Starch behaved similarly but had significantly lower values than the glucose-containing treatments. However, in the cases of cellulose and crude fibre, decomposition and immobilization proceeded slowly and reached a maximum at 40 and 50 days of incubation respectively. Cellulose per unit of its carbon oxidation had the highest capacity for immobilization of applied nitrogen, followed by crude fibre, starch and glucose carbon oxidation. Lignin was not found to be effective at all and remained almost unchanged in the soil.

摘要:
Four combinations of fish scrap, crab scrap and seaweeds were mixed with and enveloped in peat to examine the feasibility of preparing high quality composts from these materials. Neither lime, nor fertilizers were added. Each compost heap was built manually in the shape of a trapezoid with a base of 2m × 3m, and included two horizontal, perforated ventilation pipes. The air drawn naturally through the pipes, the fibrous and readily biodegradable nature of the peat, and the size and shape of the heap, allowed thermophilic (45° to 65°C) aerobic microbial activity to be attained within days. The aerobic activity was sustained so that neither H2S nor other malodours were emanated. No liquid was exuded.

摘要:
From 60 isolates of 12 varieties ofBacillus thuringiensisbioassayed in the laboratory againstMamestra brassicae, a field and glasshouse pest not controllable with HD1 (the isolate commonly used in commerce), 14 isolates had improved potency. Of these, seven in varsentomocidusandaizawihad an improvement of about 10-fold, probably adequate for practical pest control. Since some of these seven had an increased potency toSpodoptera littoralisand high potency against other pests, they are strong candidates for a valuable new product that would increase the range of pest species for practical control withB. thuringiensis.
