Eggs ofEpiricania melanoleucaof differing ages have been assessed for percentage viability under different conditions of temperature and humidity. Changing levels of these environmental factors, together with increasing age of the eggs, have been found to result in a reduction in the percentage viability.

During 1987 and 1988, studies were carried out on the effects which the type of fertilizer, organic or mineral, may have on the nutrient content (vitamins, minerals and trace elements) of carrot and celeriac (celery root). Each crop was matched according to fertilization method grown in the same area, with the same soil type, variety and growing period.

A study was conducted under laboratory conditions to determine the quantity of N mineralized from four composted manures incorporated into 2.7 kg of St-Jude sand or Tilly silty loam at rates of 0.05%, 0.10% and 0.20% of total N. With one exception (a hog slurry-sawdust based compost), net cumulative mineralization of N (Nm) during successive incubation periods increased with incubation time and with the rate of addition. After four months of incubation, Nmvalues varied from 0 to 14% of total added N. A significant third order interaction on Nmvalues was obtained with compost type, application rate and soil type. Net immobilization of N was apparent at all incorporation rates of hog slurry compost in the two soils. To evaluate C mineralization, composts were applied at the highest N rate and CO2production measured periodically. One to 8.2% of total added C from manure composts was mineralized after 28 days of incubation. For each compost type, C mineralization was higher with the sandy than with the loamy mixtures. With composted sheep manure and immature cow manure compost, which contained the highest amounts of potentially mineralizable C, the highest application rate to sandy soil promoted loss of N.

Sweet fennel (Foeniculum vulgareMiller var.dulceBattandier & Trabut, Apiaceae) and spearmint (Mentha spicataL., Lamiaceae) grew and flowered in 0.5 × 1.0-m plots located amid an organic market garden (Site 1). During 1985, twelve, approximately-weekly sets of aerial-net collections were made from August 7th through October 22nd from single experimental plots planted to each of the two species. On each date, samples were taken during three-minute episodes at hourly intervals from 0830–1630 EDST. Additional nearby plantings of sweet fennel in an herb garden (Site 2) were used for occasional supplemental sampling of flower visitors.
