Ultrasonography was performed in 24 eyes harboring malignant melanomas of the choroid to study tumor regression after xenon-arc photocoagulation at periodic intervals after each photocoagulation session. Ophthalmoscopically, 20 (83%) eyes revealed a complete regression of the tumor after 3 months to 3 years of treatment. However, ultrasonography revealed complete tumor regression in only 13 (65%) out of these 20 eyes while the remaining 7 (35%9 eyes had a residual tumor prominence of 0.75–1 μs. 14 (70%) out of 20 tumors were completely regressed 1 year after photocoagulation treatment. Most of the eyes revealed complete disappearance of the tumor after 3–5 photocoagulation sessions. Though 4 tumors which did not respond to photocoagulation treatment were located in the central temporal retina within the vascular arcade, no statistically significant difference could be seen between tumor regression and location of the tumor. Complete tumor regression was seen in 4 out of 5 eyes after encircling coagulation alone while 16 out of 19 eyes revealed complete tumor regression after addition of direct treatment of the tumor. Photocoagulation appeared to be a useful tool in the treatment of small choroidal melanomas.

Cellular retinoic acid-binding proteins (CRABP) and cellular retinol-binding protein (CRBP) can be found in cells and nuclei. They function in the same way as receptors. CRABP and CRBP were studied in 9 cases of choroidal melanoma and in 3 of retinoblastoma. CRABP was found in 2 cases of melanoma and in 3 cases of retinoblastoma. CRBP was found in 1 melanoma.

Investigation of the binocular functions in 25 patients with bilateral aphakia having undergone the two cataract operations at intervals ranging from 1 to 11 years. Only in 4 patients was the unilateral aphakia corrected temporarily by contact lenses. By the alternating cover test it was found that, after the second operation, 3 patients showed an esotropia and 14 an exotropia or exophoria for distant sight and 23 an exotropia or exophoria for near sight. Over one-third of the patients not having worn any contact lenses had no simultaneous vision at the Bagolini test for distant sight and more than half of them had no simultaneous vision for near sight. There was no stereoscopic vision for distant sight in nearly 50 % of the patients and no stereoscopic vision for near sight in more than half of those who had not worn any contact lenses. The early fitting of contact lenses or the immediate lens implantation in elderly patients together with the prescription of spectacles for near work in the case of unilateral aphakia prevent the weakening or the loss of binocular functions.

The response of a second-order feedback system is used to describe the controlling process that regulates the refraction of the human eye to achieve optimal visual acuity over the years (emmetropization). From data collected in past refractions, the equation of the feedback system has been derived for individual eyes and used to predict changes in their refraction with age with an accuracy of 0.50 diopters for 89.1% of the eyes tested. If the model is applied to other populations, the root mean square error of prediction will be between 0.20 and 0.36 diopters with a 95% degree of confidence. The model indicates that corrective lenses applied to the eyes, especially in the early years of life, will cheat the servo system and defeat the emmetropization process.

136 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) were shown the entoptic blood vessel figure. All patients were examined independently by retinal fluorescein angiography and ophthalmoscopy. 34 patients had no retinopathy, none of them believed to see alterations. 102 patients had different phases of diabetic retinopathy. If there were 1–5 microaneurysms within the 15° meridian surrounding the central fovea, 55% of the patients were able to detect their alterations. If there were 6–20 microaneurysms, 77% of the patients were able to diagnose them. 90% of the patients with an even more severe retinopathy could see their abnormalities. Obviously there are no incorrectly positive results. For intelligent and well-observing patients with IDDM the retinal blood vessel test is a useful method for early detection and self control of diabetic retinopathy. Nevertheless, control of the fundus by an ophthalmologist is still necessary.

A local synthesis of IgG antibodies against herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, varicella-zoster virus and Chlamydia trachomatis was assayed for in aqueous humor and sera from 226 patients with various clinical types of uveitis. Comparison of the ratios of specific antibodies tested for in aqueous humor and serum (C′) and the evaluation of the Goldmann-Witmer coefficient (C) to each specific antibody were simultaneously studied in each case. The combination of these two methods allowed for the diagnosis of viral uveitis in 37.7% of selected uveitis patients and in 13.27% of randomized uveitis patients.

A study of tear ferning patterns in normal and keratoconjunctivitis sicca eyes led to the classification into 4 types by Rolando [1984]. We practised this in our laboratory and observed specific and distinct tear ferning patterns for electrophoretic types 1 and 2 which Liotet et al. [1983] described as abnormal tear proteins modification found in patients who repeatedly and rapidly clog their hydrophilic lenses. In a general way, a study of tear ferning patterns can result in an appreciation of tear quality in contactology.
