Isolated cases of cataract are often hereditary. This is the case in at least 25% of congenital cataracts and in a great number of acquired cataracts. They are mostly autosomal dominant. The cataracts associated with metabolic disorders or genetic dysplasias of course display the same inheritance mode as the systemic disease.

Under certain conditions the blood flow in the ophthalmic artery can be reversed. This was proved radiologically and clinically in a patient suffering from a fistula of the cavernous sinus. The ophthalmic artery is an essential part of the circulus arteriosus. Ligature on the arteria temporalis superficialis has even positive results on the treatment of retinal ischaemia. From this, one can derive the conclusions for the theory of treatment of temporal arteritis.

The authors report 3 cases of familial microphthalmos associated in 2 cases with ichthyosis and in another with deafness. The presence in 2 cases of epibulbar cysts echographically documented leads us to a discussion on the type of microphthalmos observed, as well as on the dependence of cysts of the ocular cavity.

Electrophoresis of tears, a rapid and easy technique, shows several peaks of migration. Three main peaks correspond to the proteins synthesized by the lacrimal gland: rapid migrant proteins, lactoferrin migrating to the anode, and lysozyme migrating to the cathode. Secretory tissue injuries of the lacrimal gland show a more or less important decrease of one or several peaks. Any inflammatory reaction induces an increase in the serum albumin and immunoglobulin fractions. This exploration can be helpful in the diagnosis of the sicca syndrome or of drug poisoning thereby avoiding lacrimal biopsy.

48 patients with a diagnosis of presumptive bacterial conjunctivitis were assessed. They had been treated with either trimethoprim-polymyxin or neomycin-polymyxin-gramicidin eye drops in a randomised double-blind trial. There were 24 patients in each treatment group. There were no significant differences between the two preparations with regard to the eradication of organisms or clinical improvement, and both preparations proved to be very effective. Patient compliance was good and no adverse reactions were encountered with either preparation.

The recording of visually evoked cortical potentials in response to pattern stimuli of different brightness contrast permits functional examination of the optic nerve. This procedure has already been shown to be useful in inflammatory diseases of the optic nerve. Clinical case studies are presented showing that optic atrophies, independent of their etiology, can be ascertained by visually evoked cortical potentials elicited by pattern stimuli, occasionally also by the application of homogeneous light flashes (brightness responses). The technique is shown to be useful especially in early stages of disorders of the optic nerve.

Tear calcium contents were measured in 30 normal subjects divided into six groups of 5 individuals each, age ranging from the second to the seventh decade. No significant difference was found among the age groups. A mean of 4.40 mg of calcium/100 ml was determined for the 30 subjects with a standard deviation of 1.22 and a range of 2.60–7.60 mg/l00 ml. The tear calcium as percentage of the serum calcium was similar in the six groups and a mean of 45.68 was found for the 30 subjects. This figure is quite similar to that of serum ionised calcium as a percentage of the total serum calcium values obtained by different authors.
