Because of the risk of transmitting the acquired immune deficiency syndrome through corneal transplantation, health officials have recommended donor screening. We prospectively studied the seropositivity rate for human immunodeficiency virus infection among ocular tissue donors at our eye bank during 1986. Of 1,517 corneal donors, 5 (0.3%) were repeatedly reactive by enzyme immunoassay. For comparison, 131 (0.06%) of 206,415 blood donors in Houston were similarly seropositive during this same 1-year period. Routine serological testing can be successfully implemented by eye banking personnel to potentially reduce the risk of viral transmission by keratoplasty.

The influences of 8 different beta-blockers on the tear film stability – measured on the breakup time (BUT) of normal and healthy volunteers – was compared. All beta-blockers led to BUT reduction, however, the lowest influence was observed with levobunolol. The duration of this effect was compared with that of levobunolol, timolol and metipranolol. While the minor BUT alterations induced by levobunolol recovered after 30 min and were completely restored after 1 h, those of the two other beta-blockers lasted for over 2 h. The combination of timolol 0.5% with different artificial tears containing mainly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) 1.4%, methylcellulose and polyacrylic acid initially led also to BUT reduction. The best results were obtained with PVA 1.4%.

The lens opacity meter, a new instrument for quantifying the lens opacity, is described. The basic concept is the measurement of stray light produced by the lens. The measurement can be performed without dilating the pupil. A modulation of the light source renders the measurement insensitive to the surrounding light. The handling of the instrument is very simple. It is mounted on a slitlamp-like table. After adjusting the instrument to the eye, the measurement is initiated by depressing a console button.

Two patients with juvenile glaucoma, a 12-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman, were noted to have venous-venous anastomoses and capillary aneurysms of the retina. Their intraocular pressures had exceeded the diastolic pressure of the central retinal artery for months. Accompanying the successful surgical reduction of the intraocular pressures, these changes in the retinal vessels promptly reverted or disappeared. We consider that these capillary aneurysms and venous-venous anastomoses are the sequelae of the prolonged elevation of the intraocular pressure.

A serous hemorrhagic maculopathy with a subretinal neovascular membrane appears in about 70% of cases of angioid streaks. In this study a series of 60 eyes (31 patients) was reviewed. In 13 eyes macular subretinal neovascularizations were photocoagulated with blue-green argon laser, green argon laser, dye laser (rhodamine 6G) at 590 nm and red krypton laser. The authors present and discuss the results obtained and suggest that photocoagulation of subretinal new vessels not involving the fovea can be worth performing.

M-scaling of the conventional spot targets of clinical perimetry at low photopic adaptation levels, such as that of the Octopus automated perimeter, does not result in the expected isosensitive profile using the current equations for humans. This disparity has been attributed to variations in the ganglion cell characteristics across the retina, most notably that of spatial summation. The hypothesis was further investigated by M-scaling the perimetric sensitivity recorded under conditions favouring reduced spatial summation, namely an increased adaptation level and a longer stimulus duration afforded by the Humphrey Field Analyzer. The M-scaled data exhibited a paracentral reduction in sensitivity relative to the theoretical isosensitive profile and an increased sensitivity beyond an eccentricity of 12°. This indicates that for perimetric spot stimuli, the current human M-scaling equations under represent the fovea at the visual cortex. The implications for the design of perimetric routines are discussed.

We experienced 2 females with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed serous retinal detachment in the posterior pole of both eyes in its active phase. Fluorescein angiography showed multifocal pigment epithelial damages with fluorescein leakage into the subretinal space. However, retinal hemorrhages or cotton-wool spots typical of SLE were not observed in their courses.
