A method for transformation of photographic transparencies into three-dimensional relief pictures is presented. Black-and-white or color slides of fundi were scanned by a TV camera, the video signals digitized point by point into 256 gray levels and fed into an image processing computer. After passing low pass filter programs, the pictures were retransformed in an analog form to display them on the monitor of an analog processor in relief form. Free choice of the analog relief parameters allow to produce topographic reliefs, which give three-dimensional impression of the optic disk, the macula and of other contrast-containing structures. The method is peculiarly suitable for the control of optic disk atrophies in case of glaucoma and neuritis.

A new technique for the anatomical study of the choroidal blood vessels is described. The main advantage of this technique conducted on 24 human eyes is that it allows the observation of the whole length of any ciliary vessel from its origin through the sclera and within the choroid up to its termination in the choriocapillaris. This technique has provided additional data on the systematization of the choroidal vascular network: (1) the posterior ciliary arteries (PCA) and their branches are arranged into two independent groups: paraoptic and distal PCA; (2) there is no specific macular short PCA; (3) no anastomoses between the short PCA are observed; (4) different interpretations of the lobular systematization can be made – the end arterioles and venules can be interpreted either as peripheral or central depending upon the topography given to the lobules.

A follow-up study was performed on 54 eyes with chronic open-angle glaucoma treated with timolol maleate. It was carried out as an open clinical trial with a selected group of eyes. During 2 years of application the effect of timolol under normal conditions as well as under stress tests (darkness test, water-, coffee- or tea-drinking test, early morning measurements) was observed. Until now 40% of patients were regulated with 0.25% timolol twice daily. Another 50% obtained good pressure values under 0.5% timolol therapy and the rest with 0.5% timolol and 2% pilocarpine twice daily. Early morning measurement was shown to be the most important indicator of intraocular pressure regulation by β-blocking agents. While timolol is usually very effective in reducing the intraocular pressure during daytime, several patients showed unattended high morning pressure values. Up to now, no severe side-effects of timolol therapy have been observed.

The effect of exogenous prostacyclin (PGI2) on the rabbit eye was investigated. During intravenous infusion, intraocular pressure readings and changes of the luminal diameters of choroidal veins were recorded simultaneously. 5 ng/kg/min induced a reduction in intraocular pressure and no blood flow changes. 25 ng/kg/min resulted in a considerable vasodilatation in the posterior uvea paralleled by an increase in intraocular pressure. These results suggest the explanation that exogenous prostacyclin in high doses causes an augmentation of posterior uveal blood flow and thereby a rise in intraocular pressure. Low (2.5 mg/kg BW) or high (17.5 mg/kg BW) aspirin caused no changes in intraocular pressure, indicating a minor role of endogenous prostaglandins in regulating intraocular tension.

A new approach in the treatment of retinal detachment complicated by massive periretinal proliferation is described. The surgical procedure combines pars plana vitrectomy with temporary use of silicone oil injection and panretinal photocoagulation. The anatomical success rate for a small serie of 21 eyes was 57% after removal of the silicone oil. The 12 eyes presenting a successfully reapplied retina recovered useful visual acuity.

105 patients with retinal detachment were HLA typed and divided into hyperopic, emmetropic and myopic groups. None of these different groups showed a statistically significant correlation with any of the HLA antigens. For the patient group as a whole, there was a slightly significant correlation with HLA-B8 at the corrected p level of 0.05.

A 71-year-old patient presented with failing vision. She was a life-long smoker who had suffered from Crohn’s disease for at least 13 years and had vitamin B12 malabsorption which failed to correct with intrinsic factor. It is suggested that toxic amblyopia be considered in any patient with visual impairment associated with terminal ileal disease.

The amplitude and the light rise of the standing potential of the eye were measured in a group of 20 male and 10 female healthy young subjects. The basic value itself, if measured in the steady state, has a variability not far from its light rise, so it can also be applied clinically. The median base value in our group was 362 μV, with normal limits of 233 and 680 μV, If the light rise is calculated in relation to its basic level, the variability of such a ratio is lower than the variability of the light peak/dark trough ratio. The mean value of our ratio was 2.19 with a lower limit of 1.57. Maximal normal difference between two eyes of the same subject was 122 μV for the basic value, and 0.45 for the ratio.
