With sufficient clinical experience, there is a high probability of discovering a malignant melanoma by means of high-resolution computerized tomography. Therefore, computerized tomography can be considered as a precious addition to the existing examination methods.

4 patients out of 2 pedigrees present an association of dominant drusen, central chorioretinal dystrophy and retinal crystals. It seems to be transmitted in an autosomal dominant mode. Drusen have also been found in 4 patients (3rd generation) at the age of 40 years. Central chorioretinal dystrophy and retinal crystals have not been found prior to the age of 60 years. Visual acuity and central scotoma depend on the central chorioretinal dystrophy. Electro-oculograms and electroretinograms exhibited relatively little changes. 2 patients showed phenotype II and IV of Fredriksen.

Fluorescein angiographies were performed in 65 patients with peripheral uveitis. 34 subjects (52%) showed pathologic dye transit of the peripheral choroid. Fluorographic evidence of retinal involvement was high (91%), preferentially consisting in leakages from capillaries and venules. Fluorescein angiography was able to detect minute lesions and corresponded with the activity of the inflammation.

The water evaporation rate from the tear film of eyes with anterior surface pathology (corneal and/or conjunctival scars, meibomitis) was tested by means of the ‘Rolando-Refojo tear evaporimeter’, which allows noninvasive and reproducible test conditions. These eyes show a statistically significant increase in tear evaporation rate compared to normal eyes. The clinical implications of this finding are discussed.

Retinal degeneration is a major finding in the human and ovine ceroid lipofuscinosis. Sequential electroretinographic (ERG) studies in a young, asymptomatic, affected lamb are presented here, which demonstrate a progressive loss of the scotopic b-wave and unrecordable c-waves under halothane anesthesia. Even at this initial stage of disease, lesions were evident in the form of dystrophic retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) villi, and loss of photoreceptor cells and rod outer segments. Cone inner segments were enlarged and scanning electron microscopy emphasized these abnormalities. All cells in tapetal and nontapetal areas contained fluorescent inclusions with similar emission spectra (maximum = 539 nm). By transmission electron microscopy, storage bodies consisted of ‘fingerprint’ profiles and were most prominent in bipolar cells. The pathological features of the retina correlate well with the observed ERG changes, reaffirming the sheep as a useful model to delineate early events in ceroid lipofuscinosis.

The clinical, ultrasonographic and histopathological features (including immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy) are described in a solitary astrocytic hamartoma of the retina in a 3-year-old child who was otherwise normal. Focal calcification was detected by ultrasound and this contributed to a misdiagnosis of retinoblastoma. The small tumour was located within the nerve fibre layer at the posterior pole and consisted solely of uniformly distributed astrocytes with benign cytological characteristics. Calcospherites were found within the cytoplasm of the astrocytes. Vascular abnormalities included intimal fibroplasia of arterioles with calcification of the internal elastic lamina and widespread endothelial proliferation; such abnormalities have not been previously noted in tumours with this degree of differentiation. The histological features are compared with those in previous reports of this rare tumour.
