We reviewed the medical records of 44 patients who underwent a pars plana vitrectomy to remove posttraumatic intraocular foreign bodies. The group most affected was that of males with a mean age of 28 years, who sustained a job injury, presenting with a single corneal laceration less than 2 mm in extension. There were 31 (70.45%) metallic foreign bodies. At surgery, 27 (61.36%) of the 44 foreign bodies were removed with forceps and 17 (38.63%) with the rare-earth magnet. From these patients, 84.61% obtained a final visual acuity equal or better than that on admission. We did not find a statistically significant difference between the groups with different timing on their vitrectomy, nor between groups presenting with and without vitreous hemorrhage.

Cryotherapy was performed on 28 eyes exhibiting massive exudates (snowbank) over the pars plana and the ora serrata. Twenty-six patients ranging in age from 8 to 52 years were treated and then followed up for a median of 34 months. Eleven eyes needed repeat cryotherapy. After cryotherapy, retinal vasculitis and vitreous opacities decreased in most eyes. Although only 3 of 5 eyes with a snowbank greater than 90° and treated over 1 year from the onset achieved visual acuity of 20/25 or better, all 12 eyes with a snowbank smaller than 60° and treated within 3 months after the onset maintained a visual acuity of 20/25 or better. The prognosis was not different from the 20 eyes that received systemic steroid treatment and the 8 eyes that received no systemic steroids. We recommend cryotherapy as the primary treatment for pars planitis with a snowbank.

Posterior lenticonus has been reported by ophthalmologists, but anterior lentiplane never. Anterior lentiplane, whose characteristic is the flat or plane anterior capsule, has been discovered only recently. It is a special kind of congenital lens anomaly which may be in association with hyperplasia of the lens.

A case of congenital glaucoma in cutis marmorata teleangiectatica congenita (CMTC, van Lohuizen syndrome) is described. The cutaneous anomaly and heterochromia iridium were noticed at birth. Brown discoloration of one iris was due to iris anterior layer dysplasia, resulting in unilateral glaucoma. Two trabeculotomies were performed until persistent normalization of intraocular pressure could be achieved. The possibility of a genetic basis and hereditary condition of CMTC and its association with congenital glaucoma is discussed. Patients with CMTC should regularly undergo ophthalmological follow-up to rule out development of glaucoma.

We studied the change in the optic disk topography during spontaneous pressure reduction in laser-induced primate glaucoma (7 eyes, follow-up of 20 weeks) using computerized image analysis (vertical and horizontal cup-to-disk ratios CDR(V), CDR(H); neuroretinal rim area/disk area; cup volume/disk area). A significant correlation was found between the percent pressure reduction and the percent reversal in each disk parameter. There was no significant difference in the percent reversal between CDR(V) and CDR(H). These results suggest that reversal of cupping may depend on the percent pressure reduction, and may occur symmetrically in primate glaucoma.

In an attempt to develop a rabbit model for serous detachment, we damaged the pigment epithelium with low-intensity laser burns, lowered intraoccular pressure and administered dibutyryl adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic phosphate (cAMP), to inhibit pigment epithelial water transport. Three members of a family with dominantly inherited juvenile optic atrophy with tritan type of colour vision deficiency all showed dysfunction of the rod mechanism tested with green light after 30 min of dark adaptation. Two subjects had typical optic atrophy, centrocaecal scotoma and lower than normal visual acuity. In 1 subject with good visual acuity of both eyes, no optic atrophy was observed, but there were, in this case, reduced peripheral parts of the standard visual fields.

The Aqueous humor concentration of norfloxacin was measured following topical administration in 20 eyes. The substance was applied at different time intervals. Nineteen samples obtained prior to cataract extraction had mean concentrations between 0.014 and 0.105 μg/ml. These concentrations are under the MIC90 of most germs. One eye with minimal congestion due to a neovascular glaucoma, however, had a concentration of 0.206 μg/ml.

The efficacy, tolerability and safety of low doses (5–7 mg/kg/day) of oral ciclosporin (CS) for treatment of endogenous uveitis resistant to conventional therapy were studied in an open, noncontrolled, multicenter long-term trial. CS was shown to be effective for patients with posterior or intermediate noninfectious uveitis; it limited the progression of the disease, decreased the number and severity of inflammatory relapses, and improved visual acuity while reducing signs of intraocular inflammation. Moreover, in corticodependent patients, a steroid-sparing effect was also obtained. At low doses and by means of the careful monitoring of safety parameters, the side effects (especially renal function impairment) were well controlled.
