In vivo experiments on rabbit corneae with the excimer laser (λ = 193 nm) are presented. A new delivery system using total-reflecting prisms is described. For corneal surgery a repetition rate of about 50 Hz seems to be optimal. Healing processes ofthe cornea are demonstrated. It is supposed that the corneal incisions by excimer laser have not to be as deep as those induced by knives to change corneal curvature.

The UV sensitivity of trevira threads, which are used as material of loops in intraocular lenses, was examined under different conditions. Severe changes of the thread surface were induced by direct UV radiation without absorbing media. The in vitro alterations of the surface were smaller. The in vivo changes were unimportant and not clearly distinguishable from biological changes. Nevertheless, it is advisable for people using intraocular lenses to provide with short-wavelength filtration devices, such as absorptive spectacles.

A 29-year-old woman had a colobomatous multiloculated cystic left eyeball. None of the normal structures of the globe were discernable by clinical examination. The cyst had been present since birth and had not grown in size since early childhood. Another patient, a man of 73, had an intraocular colobomatous cyst occupying the temporal half of the large choroidal bridge coloboma in his left eye. This cyst was partially filled with shimmering crystalline fluid. This patient had bilateral open-angle glaucoma which had caused advanced damage to the optic nerve in the structurally normal right eye. It is interesting that glaucoma did not affect the left eye with choroidal coloboma and intraocular colobomatous cyst, which had normal vision. The author thinks that ectatic sclera in the area of coloboma might have protected the eye from elevated intraocular pressure.

Two families are described with members affected by Brown’s syndrome. Another case of Brown’s syndrome is described in a dizygotic twin. The authors suggest a hypothesis for the influence of heredity in Brown’s syndrome.

100 eyes with suspected or proven glaucoma were examined with the Humphrey Field Analyzer 620 with 30–1 and 30–2 threshold tests, complementary 6 ° grids which combine to a 4.2° grid. The two tests were compared with each other in the resulting 68 pathological fields. 29 of them showed obvious differences in detection of scotomas. In 11 fields, the differences were so great that isolated consideration would have led to an incorrect staging of the glaucoma. Therefore, at present both tests should be applied in glaucoma cases. The frequency of different scotoma detection per test location was more than 10 times higher in the center than in the periphery. It is suggested that a program is developed with a 3 ° grid within 10° eccentricity, a 4.2° grid between 10° and 20° and a 6° grid between 20° and 30° eccentricity.

The seasonality of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was investigated in 363 consecutive patients over the period 1974–1983 and compared to meteorological parameter variations over the same period. A highly significant correlation between rhegmatogenous retinal detachment incidence and light flux values was found. Light is suggested to act as a precipitating factor for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in a damaged retina. The possible mechanisms by which the light could be responsible for retinal detachment occurrence are discussed.
