The conjunctival biopsy of gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina displays, besides some atypical changes, the accumulation in the epithelial cells of osmiophilic particles, which are probably lipids and which are also found in the fíbroblasts of the conjunctival stroma.

Follow-up examinations 2 months to 9 years after a filtering operation with scleral flap with successful pressure regulation could be carried out in 26 patients with 29 eyes in which a threat to the point of fixation due to glaucoma was present. In the majority of the cases, it was possible to stabilize visual acuity and visual field by the operation. In the remaining cases, there was a slow melting away of the residual visual field without correlation with lens or macular changes or underlying internal conditions.

This report deals with a 47-year-old patient showing the beginning of a malignant histiocytosis in both eyelids and the orbit. The histology of the tumor confirmed a malignant histiocytosis, which generalized in a systemic, progressive, invasive proliferation of atypical histiocytes. The patient died 3 years after the beginning of the disease.

A patient with a juxtapapillary hamartoma is described, in consideration not only for the scarcity of such cases described in the literature, but also for the clinical and echographic characteristics that were observed for the involvement of the right eye, and because the patient was female. Echography and especially standardized A-scan echography, showing a lesion at high reflectivity without acoustic shadowing, allowed us to exclude the presence of a malignant melanoma and retinoblastoma, and directing us to the diagnosis of a malformation of angiomatous type.

After penetrating keratoplasties for different congenital or acquired corneal diseases, the presence of characteristic cataracta glaucomatosa lens opacities was noted in 9 cases of fixed, dilated pupil iris atrophy of Urrets-Zavalia. This association – rarely mentioned in the literature – is an opportunity to study again the different physiopathological theories on this syndrome (pupillary block by mydriasis with hypertony, upsetting of iris neurovegetative balance, particular sensitivity of ocular tissues to the surgical aggression in keratoconus), to analyze their arguments, and the preventive measures that proceed from them. The almost complete extinction of this type of complication of the corneal graft surgery, since the routine use of these preventive measures, proves the multifactorial origin of this syndrome.

We report about 8 patients all showing a nystagmus rotatorius or giratoire and differences of the horizontal component. In syndroms of the nervous system monocular nystagmus was combined with a scew-deviation or tremor of the lids. Similar to the syndroms of the fasciculus longitudinalis posterior defects in smooth or quick movements on both sides were different. After operation of a congenital cataract a vertical mystagmus was transformed in a nystagmus latens. In congenital squint syndroms monocular vertical nystagmus may be seen if one eye or both are closed. Separate pathways from the vestibular system only lead to the vertical-moving muscles of one eye.

The pecten of a nocturnally active bird, the nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) has been examined by light and electron microscopy. In this species the pecten consists of a pleated, highly vascular pigmented structure. It is situated over the optic nerve head and projects into the vitreous. Several accordion folds (4–5) are joined apically by a bridge of tissue which holds the pecten in a fan-like shape widest at the base. The entire pecten is enclosed in a fine basal lamina. Within each fold are numerous capillaries, larger blood vessels which could not be differentiated as to arterioles or venules and melanocytes. The capillaries are surrounded by extremely thick basal laminae composed of several fibrillar layers. These capillaries display extremely numerous microfolds on both the luminal and abluminal borders. The cell body is extremely thin with most organelles present in a paranuclear location. Pericytes are often associated with the capillaries. The melanocytes form an incomplete sheath around the capillaries and other blood vessels. The morphology of the pecten is indicative of a heavy involvement in the transport of materials.

A new syndrome consisting of bilateral diffuse malignant uveal melanoma and simultaneous occurrence of another systemic malignant neoplasm was described in 6 patients in 1982. The present study reports a seventh case. Our patient was younger than the patients previously reported. He had large cell carcinoma of the right lung. The bilateral intraocular neoplasm was characterized as a diffuse malignant uveal melanoma of the mixed cell type by light microscopy and by transmission electron microscopy. All parts of the tumor contained S-100 protein. In addition to the two primary neoplasms, the patient had a combination of Ota’s and Ito’s naevi on the left side.
