Patients have to be informed before cataract surgery about possible complications, about chances and risks. This should be done in a written manner with additional verbal explanations. We documented all details of 4,300 cataract operations on computer-readable forms and obtained statistics on type and frequency of complications as well as visual acuity 1 week after the operation. With these data we have a reliable base for the presurgical information of our patients. Detailed information about possible risks and chances of cataract extraction were given to each patient by means of a written form which was read to the patient and explained in details to him. Immediately afterwards we tested the reaction of the patient upon the full information. It was found that the reactions were surprisingly positive. Not one of the patients felt less inclined to undergo surgery and not one patient had less confidence toward the hospital. The vast majority (approximately 90%) of the patients said in contrary that their confidence was much increased after the information. A similar type of information can be recommanded, therefore, for moral and legal reasons.

The responses at the Ishihara test, the Nagel anomaloscope, the standard Panel D–15 and the 100 hue test (with correction of the age effect) were recorded in 38 alcoholics in deprivation period (successively subdivided according to age, to abstinence duration and to liver condition) and in 32 subjects suffering from mental diseases (successively subdivided according to ethylic past, to age, to duration of the stay in the hospital and to activity). It is shown that alcoholism causes a diminution of the performance at the used colour vision tests and especially at the 100 hue test. The defect can be ascribed to psychical factors (chiefly in the cases of mental disease and in the younger people), but also to an acquired blue-yellow defectiveness of colour vision with a shift of the Rayleigh match to red (such a defectiveness can also be due to a liver damage and to some intoxications) and even to a Type II acquired red-green defectiveness of colour vision (possibly by tobacco or disulfiram intoxication). The defect due to alcohol itself soon disappears during desintoxication. The authors draw some practical conclusions.

6 cardiac patients were found to present various degrees of corneal involvement following systemic treatment with amiodarone. The clinical pattern of the keratopathy, its benign course and the pathophysiology are discussed. Lacrimal insufficiency or incomplete blinking seem to contribute to the severity of the keratopathy.

A 20-year-old male was injured in his right eye by the stopper of a bottle filled with carbonated fruit juice. The contusion caused a recurrent hyphema which lasted approximately 6 weeks and responded to ε-aminocaproic acid treatment. Among the investigations for coagulation and fibrinolysis, the only pathological laboratory finding was a shortened plasma euglobulin clot lysis time (1.5 h) which returned to normal (4–5 h) following the ε-aminocaproic and treatment.

Cysticercus cellulosae, the larval stage of Taenia solium, was studied by light and electron microscopy after its removal from the vitreous. The ultrastructure of the larva is highly organized and displays a superficial tegument and deeper parenchyma. The tegument contains a microvillous surface overlying a syncytial cytoplasm. A deeper muscular layer overlies the parenchyma, within which are highly specialized structures important in water balance, flame cells, and acid-neutralizing calcareous corpuscles.

We report on 4 children suffering from orbital rhabdomyosarcoma. The ultra-sonographical findings in both A and B mode are: irregular structure, poorly outlined borders, very low reflectivity, weak sound attenuation, hard consistency and little mobility of the tumor. There was no correlation between the ultrasonographical findings and the histological type of rhabdomyosarcoma.

A case of a 6-year-old boy is referred. Ophthalmological findings suggested sub-acute sclerosing panencephalitis. Only very distinct neurological alterations could be found. Positive measle titers in serum and cerebrospinal fluid and positive subacute sclerosing panencephalitis factors proved the diagnosis. While the first eye showed a macular scar and mild optic neuritis the second eye developed the acute stage of retinal lesion and immediate visual loss. Differential diagnosis and possible therapeutical aspects are discussed.

The therapeutic effect of tiopronin on incipient senile cataracts was evaluated in 150 cases (275 eyes) by a double-blind study using nonactive placebo. A more favorable tendency to visual acuity was noted in the tiopronin than in the placebo group. The slit-lamp microscopic findings showed a statistically significant difference between the tiopronin and the placebo groups. Integrated judgement revealed tiopronin to be significantly effective as compared with the placebo. A side effect of fever with systemic eruption was observed in 1 case in the tiopronin group but disappeared completely when administration of the drug was discontinued.
